What to Say When Someone Is Grieving

Knowing what to say when someone is grieving can be really hard. You want to offer comfort, but you also don’t want to say the wrong thing. Whether you’re writing a sympathy card, sending a text, or speaking in person, the most meaningful condolence messages are usually short, heartfelt, and thoughtful. Here are a few tips to help you express your support with kindness and respect:

Keep it simple. You don’t need to write a long message to show you care. Even a short, sincere sentence can offer a lot of comfort.
Speak from the heart. A genuine message is always better than trying to find the “perfect” words.
Mention the person who passed away by name if you feel comfortable. This small detail can make your message feel much more personal.
