Troubleshooting Tips

PDF download Download Article
  1. Even if you just purchased the remote and it came with batteries, you want to replace them. A universal remote won't work properly without good batteries.
  2. Press all the buttons to make sure they aren't stuck. A stuck button can cause the universal remote not to work.
  3. Press the "Power" button on the TV to turn it off, then unplug it from power for 5 seconds. Plug it back in, then try the programming steps again!
  4. Many universal remotes rely on IR sensors to control your TV or other devices. If anything, like a decorative vase or cord cover, blocks the bottom corner of your TV, your remote most likely won't work.
  5. Many buttons only work for specific types of content. For example, the channel buttons won't work if you're watching something like Netflix; and only work for antenna or direct coaxial connections. "Play" and "Pause" only work for apps, like Netflix, not live TV.[3]
  6. If you can, get another remote and program it with your Vizio TV. You might be able to use that one instead.
