The battery stores enough charge to start the engine, and the alternator takes the engine’s power and converts it into the energy your battery needs to stay on. So, if you’re running into electrical issues, it can be tough to figure out whether the battery or alternator is to blame. Luckily, you can usually determine what the culprit is based on when the issues occur, and what type of electrical issue you have. We’ll break all of that down and more.
Things You Should Know
- If your car won't start, the battery is probably bad. If your car starts but then dies after it's been running, the alternator is probably bad.
- If you jumpstart your car and it runs just fine, the battery was likely dead and the alternator is operating correctly.
- If the lights are dim or the radio won't turn on, it's likely because the battery is bad. If the lights are bright at first but then go dark, your alternator is likely bad.

The battery indicator on your dashboard actually won’t help you determine whether it’s the battery or alternator, since the dash light will turn on for either problem.[15]Thanks
