There are plenty of reasons that your vehicle might make noise but not start, but there are only a few reasons a car won’t start and make zero noise. It’s likely your battery, solenoid, or ignition switch, and there are plenty of ways you can figure out the issue and resolve it. We spoke with Jason Shackleford, a mechanic with over 24 years of experience repairing vehicles, to get to the bottom of what’s keeping your car from turning on.
Things You Should Know
- Start by assuming the battery itself is to blame and jump the vehicle. If jumping the car works and this doesn’t happen again, don’t sweat it.
- Batteries need to be replaced every 4-5 years, so if your battery keeps dying and it’s older, it’s probably time for a new one.
- If the battery is fine, check the solenoid and starter switch. It could also be you have a stuck brake light or parasitic drain.
