At this point, who isn’t a huge fan of KPop Demon Hunters? We certainly are—and if you’re trying to put together a Rumi costume, we bet you are, too! While making yourself over to look just like Rumi might seem difficult, it’s not so hard when you break the process down into steps, which is exactly what we’ve done. In this article, we’ll show you how to put together Rumi’s “How It’s Done,” “Golden,” and “What It Sounds Like” costumes with minimal fuss, and recommend places to search for costume supplies (or full, pre-made costumes) as well. Let’s get going!

DIY Rumi KPop Demon Hunters Costume: At a Glance

  • Rumi’s “How It’s Done” Look: Get a yellow bomber jacket, white mock neck shirt, navy shorts, and black combat boots. Make patches for the jacket with fabric paint and felt.
  • Rumi’s “What It Sounds Like” Look: Wear a cropped mockneck shirt, white shorts, and calf-length boots; paint her demon patterns with water-activated body paint.
  • Rumi’s “Golden” Jacket: Use a plain or sequined black cropped jacket as the base. Add gold trim and accents to the jacket, as well as patches on either shoulder.

  1. Rumi’s bright yellow jacket might look complicated, but it’s not too hard to recreate when you break it down! To start, get yourself a yellow cropped jacket—like this one from Amazon. It’s even better if you can find a yellow jacket with black trim, like this jacket (also on Amazon), since that’ll match Rumi the best. Then, you’ll need to add detailing:[1]
    • If you’re doing this from scratch, you can make the patches on Rumi’s jacket using fabric paint and felt, then attach them with fabric glue or tape.
    • Don’t have much crafting experience? That’s okay! If you don’t want to try making the jacket yourself, there are plenty of costume replicas you can buy:
      • Netflix is actually selling its own Rumi jacket, available in the online shop.
      • Cossky has a yellow Rumi jacket available.
      • Miccostumes is selling a complete Rumi costume cosplay ensemble.
      • You can also check Etsy; plenty of independent craftspeople are making Rumi jackets, too—like the one featured on this store.
  2. Luckily, Rumi’s “How It’s Done” shirt is really easy to manage, since the jacket is the main star of the show. She’s just wearing a white mock-neck (or turtleneck) crop top underneath, which you can find on sites like Amazon or even just go thrift shopping for, to save money! You can go sleeveless or get a long-sleeved shirt, since you’ll be wearing the jacket over it anyway.
    • If you’re putting together a Rumi costume for Halloween and don’t want to walk around in chilly weather with a crop top, you can totally go for a regular-length shirt instead. White and mock-neck are the main things to look for!

  3. In her “How It’s Done” look, Rumi wears a pair of navy blue shorts with a hot pink trim running vertically along the side seams. If you aren’t buying an already-made Rumi costume, shop (or thrift) for a pair of navy blue shorts. Then, attach strips of hot pink felt or fabric to either side of the shorts using fabric glue. And voila—you’re all set!
    • If you’ll be walking around in cold weather with your costume, you can opt for something warmer—like navy blue leggings with the hot pink stripes down the sides instead.
  4. For shoes, Rumi wears black calf-length platform boots. If you already have a pair of rad black platform boots in your closet, wear those! If not, you can thrift, go to a shoe store IRL, or shop online for a pair instead; Amazon alone has a ton of black calf platform boot options for you to choose from.
    • If you don’t want to walk around on high platforms or already have a pair of tall, non-platform boots, that’s fine, too. The main idea is to wear black boots!
  5. In her “How It’s Done” look, Rumi’s main accessories include a hot pink belt with a norigae attached. Norigae are traditional Korean accessories typically used in hanbok; they were hung from coat strings and skirts as a good-luck charm, and luckily, you can find them online, including on platforms like Amazon. [2]
    • Rumi wears two silver necklaces: one chain and one circular pendant. You can use some of your own jewelry, if you want—or shop around for necklaces instead.
    • She also has a few different silver rings and earrings; again, you can dig into your own jewelry if possible, since none of the jewelry pieces are super distinct in the movie.
  6. Rumi’s vibrant purple hair is done up in a thick braid—specifically, a dragon braid. Dragon braids allow for the most volume, helping you achieve the super volumized mohawk braid look that Rumi always rocks.[3] If you aren’t sure how to do a dragon braid, we have an easy, step-by-step Rumi hair tutorial right here for you to follow!
    • Basically, rather than using a traditional over-and-under braiding pattern, a dragon braid involves wrapping small ponytails around each other.
    • Rumi doesn’t appear to be wearing any accessories in her braid for “How It’s Done,” but if you wanted to add a few silver clips or hairpins as accents, you definitely could!
    • You can braid your natural hair if it’s long enough, or you can invest in a long purple wig. There are also plenty of pre-braided Rumi wigs available, if you’d prefer that.
  7. For “How It’s Done,” Rumi’s makeup includes pink lip gloss and silver or pale blue sparkly eyeshadow. Once you’ve applied the eyeshadow, you can also add some black mascara to your eyelashes and paint winged black eyeliner on your eyelids. With that simple process, your Rumi makeup should be complete!

Creating Rumi’s White “What It Sounds Like” Costume (DIY)

  1. If you want to dress up as Rumi from the song “What It Sounds Like,” after her demonic heritage has been discovered, the first thing you’ll need is a white mockneck cropped shirt. Rumi’s shirt has a half-zip at the collar; if you can’t find a shirt with a zipper yourself, you can sew a decorative zipper to the shirt yourself (or attach it with fabric glue).[4]
    • Rumi’s shirt technically has a bit of a metallic tinge, so you might want to opt for a white metallic tank top, like this one or this one from Amazon.
    • However, if you end up with more of a classic white mockneck tank top, that’s totally fine, too!
    • You can also use this costume to dress up as Rumi during her “Golden” performance. It’s the same outfit with a jacket added (which we’ll show you how to make below).
  2. During “Golden” and “What It Sounds Like,” Rumi wears a pair of white high-rise shorts. Like the top, they technically look a little holographic or metallic, so you can try finding a pair of white metallic shorts (like these or this pair on Amazon). However, a plain pair of white high-waisted shorts will work great, too!
    • Rumi’s shorts have a vertical black stripe running down either side along the seams. If you want to add this detail, you can use black bias tape (which will stick right to the fabric) or attach felt strips with fabric glue.
  3. Rumi’s “Golden” and “What It Sounds Like” shoes are white knee-high lace-up boots. You can go thrifting or shopping for a pair, or find a pair you like online and order them from home. Either way, it shouldn’t be too hard to track down boots that work for this costume!
  4. Rumi’s main accessory is a thick gold leather belt, worn around her waist with a gold waist chain attached to it. She also wears gold earrings, although they’re not as distinct; if you have gold earrings of your own, you could add them to the ensemble, or you could go thrifting for a pair of earrings that match the overall vibe of the outfit—as long as they’re “golden”!
  5. Rumi’s hairstyle really doesn’t change much throughout the movie; as we’ve discussed above, she wears her hair in a long, thick dragon braid. With a dragon braid, you can add more volume to get the super volumized mohawk braid look that Rumi always rocks. If you aren’t sure how to do a dragon braid, we have an easy, step-by-step Rumi hair tutorial right here for you to follow!
    • In her “Golden” and “What It Sounds Like” outfits, Rumi also has gold hairpieces set into each stitch of her braid as accents.
    • So, look for some gold, decorative hair pins you can stick into your braid.
    • Once again, you can buy a pre-braided Rumi wig to save time, if you so desire!
  6. Rumi’s demon patterns are what make this costume really pop; in “What It Sounds Like,” they’re visibly covering her arms, neck, and the sides of her face. Use water-activated body paint and a paintbrush to create Rumi’s demon patterns on yourself. You can use a darker purple color for the patterns, or a very pale lavender-white color if you want to portray the patterns after Rumi’s “What It Sounds Like” transformation.”
    • In terms of face makeup, apply some pink lip gloss to your lips. Then, apply black mascara and winged eyeliner to your eyes, along with sparkly golden eyeshadow to accentuate the outfit.

Making Rumi’s “Golden” Jacket

PDF download Download Article
  1. You can add this flashy jacket to the above white suit costume to achieve Rumi’s complete “Golden” outfit! If you can find a black sequin jacket like this one, that’s ideal. If not, it’s okay to just shop for a black cropped jacket instead—either online or, if you prefer, in person at retailers and thrift stores.
    • If you’d rather buy the jacket pre-made and skip the assemblage parts, you can get a “Golden” Rumi costume online from retailers like Light in the Box, Cossky, and Amazon.
    • You can also find Rumi cosplay costumes for sale on Etsy, like this one or this costume set.
  2. Rumi’s jacket is decked out with gold accents, which you can recreate! The easiest way to apply trim is by using gold bias tape; it’ll stick right to the fabric without any ironing or sewing. You could also get some gold fabric trim and sew it to the jacket yourself, but we wouldn’t recommend that unless you’re comfortable with a sewing machine. Add trim to the following areas:
    • Apply golden trim to the edges of the jacket and two stripes vertically down the sleeves (from shoulder to cuff).
    • Then, add 5 strips of golden trim to the front of the jacket on either side. Fan them out so the top one is going up toward the neck, the bottom is going down, and the middle 3 are draped diagonally toward the shoulder.
    • Create a circle around each shoulder with two strips of golden trim, so they’re surrounding the
    • Finally, add two thicker strips of golden trim around the jacket’s arm-holes, as though you’re outlining where a backpack’s straps might be.
  3. Cut two strips of black elastic and attach the ends to the insides of the jacket, so one end of each strap is connected to the left side of the coat and the other end is connected to the right. Criss-cross the elastic so it forms an “X” shape once attached. You can use fabric glue to attach the elastic, or sew the pieces in place.
    • Cut the strips of elastic long enough that the jacket will still fit your torso when you put it on (and you can put the jacket on comfortably).
    • Rumi’s jacket also has a small golden star-shaped brooch attached to the very center of the straps, where they cross.
  4. There are colorful, 10-pointed star patches across each shoulder of Rumi’s jacket. Luckily, you can get iron-on patches with this exact design off of Etsy (here or here, for example). Just keep in mind that some jacket fabrics may not work well with an iron, like a jacket covered in sequins. If that’s the case, you can use fabric glue or tape to hold the patches in place instead.
    • With that, your Rumi jacket should be complete. Time to paint the town red and slay!
