At this point, who isn’t a huge fan of KPop Demon Hunters? We certainly are—and if you’re trying to put together a Rumi costume, we bet you are, too! While making yourself over to look just like Rumi might seem difficult, it’s not so hard when you break the process down into steps, which is exactly what we’ve done. In this article, we’ll show you how to put together Rumi’s “How It’s Done,” “Golden,” and “What It Sounds Like” costumes with minimal fuss, and recommend places to search for costume supplies (or full, pre-made costumes) as well. Let’s get going!
DIY Rumi KPop Demon Hunters Costume: At a Glance
- Rumi’s “How It’s Done” Look: Get a yellow bomber jacket, white mock neck shirt, navy shorts, and black combat boots. Make patches for the jacket with fabric paint and felt.
- Rumi’s “What It Sounds Like” Look: Wear a cropped mockneck shirt, white shorts, and calf-length boots; paint her demon patterns with water-activated body paint.
- Rumi’s “Golden” Jacket: Use a plain or sequined black cropped jacket as the base. Add gold trim and accents to the jacket, as well as patches on either shoulder.
Steps
Making Rumi’s “Golden” Jacket
-
Start with a black cropped jacket. You can add this flashy jacket to the above white suit costume to achieve Rumi’s complete “Golden” outfit! If you can find a black sequin jacket like this one, that’s ideal. If not, it’s okay to just shop for a black cropped jacket instead—either online or, if you prefer, in person at retailers and thrift stores.
- If you’d rather buy the jacket pre-made and skip the assemblage parts, you can get a “Golden” Rumi costume online from retailers like Light in the Box, Cossky, and Amazon.
- You can also find Rumi cosplay costumes for sale on Etsy, like this one or this costume set.
-
Add golden trim to the jacket. Rumi’s jacket is decked out with gold accents, which you can recreate! The easiest way to apply trim is by using gold bias tape; it’ll stick right to the fabric without any ironing or sewing. You could also get some gold fabric trim and sew it to the jacket yourself, but we wouldn’t recommend that unless you’re comfortable with a sewing machine. Add trim to the following areas:
- Apply golden trim to the edges of the jacket and two stripes vertically down the sleeves (from shoulder to cuff).
- Then, add 5 strips of golden trim to the front of the jacket on either side. Fan them out so the top one is going up toward the neck, the bottom is going down, and the middle 3 are draped diagonally toward the shoulder.
- Create a circle around each shoulder with two strips of golden trim, so they’re surrounding the
- Finally, add two thicker strips of golden trim around the jacket’s arm-holes, as though you’re outlining where a backpack’s straps might be.
-
Attach black, criss-crossing straps to the jacket. Cut two strips of black elastic and attach the ends to the insides of the jacket, so one end of each strap is connected to the left side of the coat and the other end is connected to the right. Criss-cross the elastic so it forms an “X” shape once attached. You can use fabric glue to attach the elastic, or sew the pieces in place.
- Cut the strips of elastic long enough that the jacket will still fit your torso when you put it on (and you can put the jacket on comfortably).
- Rumi’s jacket also has a small golden star-shaped brooch attached to the very center of the straps, where they cross.
-
Add iron-on patches to the jacket’s shoulders. There are colorful, 10-pointed star patches across each shoulder of Rumi’s jacket. Luckily, you can get iron-on patches with this exact design off of Etsy (here or here, for example). Just keep in mind that some jacket fabrics may not work well with an iron, like a jacket covered in sequins. If that’s the case, you can use fabric glue or tape to hold the patches in place instead.
- With that, your Rumi jacket should be complete. Time to paint the town red and slay!
