  1. The type chart for Pokémon GO is a bit different than the mainline game series’ chart. Additionally, the damage multipliers are different: super-effective moves deal 1.6x damage, non-effective moves deal 0.625x damage, double-super effective moves deal 2.56x damage, and immune moves deal 0.391x damage.[1]

Tips for Memorizing the Pokémon Types

PDF download Download Article
  1. Practice is the best way to learn and remember all of the different types’ strengths and weaknesses. When you battle other pokémon, take note of what moves are super effective against you and your opponent, as well as what moves are not effective against you and your opponent. Then, test yourself on what pokémon and moves you should use when battling new opponents.
    • It can be helpful to play with single-type pokémon first to understand what types they’re strong and weak against. Then, as you get the hang of typing, play with double-type pokémon.
    • Learning all 18 types’ strengths and weaknesses can be overwhelming at once, so focus on identifying your main pokémon team’s effectiveness first.
    • Keep a cheat sheet on hand to help you as you play. Either use the type charts for the main games or Pokémon GO above, or jot down your own notes.
  2. Generally, what a certain type is weak against and resistant to follows basic logic. For instance, Fire-types “burn” Grass-types, Grass-types “absorb” Water-types, and Water-types “extinguish” Fire-types. So, as you’re playing the games, think about how each type would be affected in the real world to learn their effectiveness.
    • Some types, like Psychic, Fighting, and Dark, have less obvious associations that can make them harder to remember. But don’t worry—we’ll explain the logic behind each type’s weaknesses, resistances, and immunities in the sections below to make remembering them easier!
  3. This poem is accurate from Gen 6 (starting with Pokémon X/Y) onwards, and will help you remember all of the matchups if you memorize it. If you get assigned to memorize a poem in school, you can even use this one!
    • Normal attacks as normal, except against Rock and Steel types, where it is not very effective, and Ghost types, where it has no effect.
    • Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel will burn in Fire's blazing light.
    • Water drowns out Fire, Rock, and even solid Ground.
    • Those who fly and those who swim, weak to Electric's sound.
    • Flying pecks at Grass and Bug, and brings Fighting to yield,
    • While Grass, Psychic, and Dark are quite sure to be Bug's field!
    • Grass soaks up the Water type and breaks up Ground and Rock.
    • Fire, Ice, Flying, and Bug are weak to Rock's hard knock.
    • Ice freezes the earth and air, and snaps shut Dragon's fangs,
    • While Dragon takes on Dragon, with a fiery, loud bang.
    • Fighting takes out Normal and Ice, and smashes Rock, Dark, and Steel.
    • Poison comes and causes Fairy, Grass, and Bugs to keel.
    • The Ghost will spook the Psychic, and sometimes even himself.
    • Steel forces Fairy, Ice, and Rock to go up on the shelf.
    • Ground shakes up Electric, Rock, Poison, Fire, and Steel.
    • Psychic shall cause Fighting and Poison to always kneel.
    • Dark will scare the Psychic and bring terror to Ghost's grin.
    • Against Fighting, Dragon, and Dark, Fairy's sure to win.
    • You've memorized weaknesses for all Pokémon types.
    • So now you can do battle without having to gripe!

Logical Reasons for Each Type’s Weaknesses

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Bug Bug types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[2]
    • Flying - Many birds eat bugs.
    • Fire - Burns bugs.
    • Rock - Crushes bugs.
  2. 2
Dark Dark types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[3]
    • Bugs - Most thrive in the darkness (living underground, behind cupboards, etc.), so they’re not scared of it.
    • Fighting - Represents the use of noble, disciplined techniques, which best the dirty, underhanded tactics of the Dark type (essentially good vs. evil).
      • Note: The Dark type is called the Evil type in Japan.
    • Fairy - Represents the force of good that can overcome evil. Fairies are also often associated with light, which banishes darkness.
  3. 3
Dragon Dragon types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[4]
    • Dragon - Often considered to be so powerful that they can only be beaten by other dragons.
    • Fairy - Represents magic and natural forces, which can overpower strong, mythical creatures. Even dragons are dependent on nature. It can also be a nod to some fairy tales.
    • Ice - Reptiles often become slow and sluggish in cold temperatures due to being cold-blooded (dragons are often portrayed as being reptiles). Plus, ice can freeze a dragon’s wings.
  4. Electric types are weak to 1 type, which they receive double the damage from:[5]
    • Ground - Refers to electrical grounding, which creates a low resistance path to discharge a current, and is used in circuitry to remove excess charges.
  5. 5
Fairy Fairy types are weak to 2 types, which they receive double the damage from:[6]
    • Poison - Toxic chemicals that pollute nature (which fairies represent), harming or even killing plants and animals in the process.
    • Steel - Steel is primarily formed from iron, which is commonly believed to ward off fae creatures in folklore. Additionally, steel is a man-made creation that directly opposes the natural forces that fairies represent.
  6. Fighting types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[7]
    • Flying - Airborne targets are generally very fast and nimble, easily dodging melee attacks, then diving in to strike once there's an opening.
    • Fairy - Magic beats brute force in a fight. Plus, the natural forces that fairies represent (e.g., aging) cannot always be combated.
    • Psychic - Brains over brawn: the mind can find ways to outsmart and overcome raw strength.
  7. 7
Fire Fire types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[8]
    • Ground - Sand, dirt, etc., can be used to extinguish fires by smothering and removing their oxygen supply.
    • Rock - Rocks are not combustible. They’re also sometimes placed around fires to prevent them from spreading.
    • Water - Extinguishes fires by removing all the heat.
  8. Flying types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[9]
    • Electric - Lightning is more likely to strike objects that are higher up, since it creates a shorter path through the air.
    • Ice - Ice can weigh down things with wings (e.g., birds, airplanes), preventing them from flying. Many species of birds cannot survive in cold weather, and instead migrate towards the Equator. Additionally, hail and blizzards can make flight difficult.
    • Rock - Possibly related to the phrase “Kill two birds with one stone.” Birds are also very lightweight, so rocks can easily weigh them down.
  9. Ghost types are weak to 2 types, which they receive double the damage from:[10]
    • Dark - Controls the dark, which ghosts live in. Necromancy, a branch of magic used to raise and control the dead (ghosts), is often considered evil.
    • Ghost - Ghosts aren’t tangible to living things, so only ghosts can affect each other.
  10. Grass types are weak to 5 types, which they receive double the damage from:[11]
    • Bug - Many bugs eat grass and plants.
    • Flying - Lots of birds eat plants.
    • Fire - Plants burn and die in extremely hot temperatures.
    • Ice - Plants freeze and die in extremely cold temperatures.
    • Poison - Chemical weed killers are used to kill plants and weeds.
  11. Ground types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[12]
    • Grass - Plant roots absorb nutrients from the ground. The roots also split the ground while simultaneously holding it together.
    • Ice - Water expands as it freezes, splitting the ground and making it very brittle.
    • Water - Turns the ground to mud and can erode the earth.
  12. Ice types are weak to 4 types, which they receive double the damage from:[13]
    • Fire - Melts ice.
    • Fighting - Represents physical force that can chip away at/break the ice.
    • Rock - Can break up ice.
    • Steel - Can chip, break, and sculpt ice.
  13. Normal types are weak to 1 type, which they receive double the damage from:[14]
    • Fighting - A normal (untrained) person would easily lose against a trained fighter.
  14. Poison types are weak to 2 types, which they receive double the damage from:[15]
    • Ground - The earth absorbs poison
    • Psychic - While the body can be poisoned, the mind is metaphysical and has the upper hand over poison (mind over matter). Psychic powers can also be used for healing and removing poison.
  15. 15
Psychic Psychic types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[16]
    • Bug - A common fear that messes with the mind and can ruin someone’s concentration.
    • Dark - A common fear.
    • Ghost - A common fear.
  16. 16
Rock Rock types are weak to 5 types, which they receive double the damage from:[17]
    • Fighting - Physical force that can crack, break, or shatter a rock.
    • Grass - Plant roots can split rocks.
    • Ground - Can move and break rocks with enough force (earthquakes, sinkholes, landslides, etc.)
    • Steel - Can break up rocks (drills, mining picks, etc.).
    • Water - Can weather and erode rocks, breaking them up.
  17. 17
Steel Steel types are weak to 3 types, which they receive double the damage from:[18]
    • Fighting - Strong physical blows can dent steel.
    • Fire - Can shape, warp, and ultimately melt down steel.
    • Ground - Earthquakes can destroy steel structures (like buildings).
  18. Water is weak to 2 types, which they receive double the damage from:[19]
    • Grass - Plants absorb water through their roots.
    • Electric - Water conducts electricity, shocking anything that’s in it.

Logical Reasons for Each Type’s Resistances

PDF download Download Article
  1. Bug types resist 3 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Fighting - Bugs are small and nimble targets, making them hard to hit.
    • Grass - Many bugs eat plants and grass.
    • Ground - Lots of bugs tunnel through the ground (e.g., ants, centipedes), and are built to handle the terrain.
  2. Dark types resist 2 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Dark - They’re aware of the underhanded tactics their own type uses, and are unlikely to fall for them.
    • Ghost - They live in the darkness, which Dark types control. Dark forces can also control the undead and use them for evil.
  3. Dragon types resist 4 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Electric - Some dragons (e.g., Cynder from Skylanders) can shoot electricity.
    • Fire - Many dragons breathe fire and are unharmed by it. They often live in hot places, too.
    • Grass - Dragon fire burns through grass and plants.
    • Water - Many dragons, especially Chinese ones, have power over water and weather.
  4. Electric types resist 3 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Electric - Their bodies are naturally resistant to large amounts of electricity to protect them from their own attacks, hence why they're also immune to the paralysis status effect.
    • Flying - Lightning strikes from up high, making it hard for flying foes to get close.
    • Steel - Steel is a conductor, meaning electrical charges travel through it.
  5. Fairy types resist 3 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Bug - Fairies live in nature, so they aren’t bothered by bugs.
    • Dark - A fairy's powers of nature, light, and purity are stronger than the Dark type's evilness and deceit.
    • Fighting - Fairy magic is stronger than physical fighting attacks.
  6. Fighting types resist 3 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Bug - Are tiny and can’t pierce strong muscles. Plus, “tough” people aren’t scared of bugs.
    • Dark - Good is stronger than evil (the Dark type is called the Evil type in the Japanese versions). Plus, “tough” people aren’t scared of the dark.
    • Rock - Can easily be caught and broken by skilled fighters.
  7. Fire types resist 6 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Bug - Quickly burns when near fire.
    • Grass - Easily burns when close to fire.
    • Fairy - Fires can burn through and destroy nature if they get out of control. They've also been used by humans to clear land.
    • Fire - Are resistant to the immense heat their own bodies generate, hence why they're also immune to the burn status effect.
    • Ice - Melts as soon as it gets close to fire.
    • Steel - Bends and warps when it gets close to fire.
  8. Flying types resist 3 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Bug - Are the natural prey of many birds, so they’re much weaker than them.
    • Grass - Plants and grasses are used as food and nests for birds.
    • Fighting - Are stuck on the ground, so they can’t reach flying types well to do solid damage.
  9. Ghost types resist 2 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Bug - Ghosts aren't scared of bugs. Some ghosts can use bugs to give people nightmares.
    • Poison - Can’t infect or harm non-living things.
  10. Grass types resist 4 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Electric - Plants and wood aren’t very conductive. They can be used to safely move live wires.
    • Grass - Plants often compete for nutrients and block each other from receiving them, nullifying their attacks.
      • Some plants, such as Mistletoe, the Indian pipe, and Dodder, are parasites that leech water and nutrients from other plants, sometimes smothering them in the process.
    • Ground - Plant roots help hold the ground together (i.e., why deforestation increases the risk of landslides).
    • Water - Plants absorb water, weakening its attack.
  11. Ground types resist 2 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Poison - Can’t harm inorganic materials, like dirt and sand. Plus, the ground absorbs poison.
    • Rock - Can get caught and buried in the ground. Plus, rocks come from the ground.
  12. Ice types resist 1 type, which they receive half damage from:
    • Ice - It can't freeze itself (as it’s already frozen), and thus, is immune to the freezing status effect. It can only bang against more ice, breaking both apart in the process.
  13. Normal types resist 0 types. By definition, they lack any special abilities that give them an advantage over other types.
    • The normal type is the only type without any resistances or super-effective moves, essentially making them a jack-of-all-trades.
  14. Poison types resist 5 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Bug - Insecticide is used to kill bugs and prevent them from attacking plants.
    • Fairy - A fairy’s nature powers are weak to toxins that can harm or kill it.
    • Fighting - Like in real life, poisons and toxins can weaken even the strongest fighter.
    • Grass - Weedicide kills weeds and plants, preventing them from invading gardens.
    • Poison - Toxic plants and animals (by necessity) have a natural resistance to their own species' poison/venom (some can resist those from other species as well) to avoid getting hurt by their own toxins. It's also why they're immune to the poison status effect.
  15. Psychic types resist 2 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Fighting - The power of the mind is often stronger than brute strength.
    • Psychic - As the common saying goes, “Great minds think alike.” This can mean that a Psychic type can expect what is to come from another. Plus, two strong minds will often butt heads and neutralize each other.
  16. Rock types resist 4 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Fire - Rocks aren’t combustible and can’t be melted by normal fires. Plus, rocks can stop fire from spreading.
    • Normal - A regular person or animal cannot easily break large boulders.
    • Poison - Rocks cannot be poisoned, as they're not alive.
    • Flying - Most birds can’t peck through rocks. Plus, they can’t fly through rocks.
  17. Steel types resist 10 types, giving them the most resistances of all types. They receive half damage from:
    • Bug - Cannot bite or sting through hard metal.
    • Dragon - In most fairy tales, knights wear steel armour to fight against dragons, and win.
    • Fairy - Their magic is weakened/warded off by the iron in the steel. Plus, steel represents the might of humans vs nature.
    • Flying - Birds and other flying creatures can have a hard time flying due to buildings in their way.
    • Grass - Plants can’t root in or grow through steel structures.
    • Ice - Can’t weaken or break through steel.
    • Rock - Is softer than steel, so it can’t dent or break the metal.
    • Normal - The average person can’t break through steel without specific tools.
    • Psychic - A common psychic trick is to bend a steel spoon with the mind, which is difficult. Plus, some people believe tin foil hats block psychic attacks.
    • Steel - Can only scratch itself due to being the same material and having the same density.
  18. Water types resist 4 types, which they receive half damage from:
    • Fire - Extinguishes most of the fire before it can do full damage.
    • Ice - Water is warmer than ice, so it can melt it.
    • Steel - Steel can corrode and rust in water, weakening steel-type attacks.
    • Water - Water plus more water just equals water, meaning their attacks are nullified.

Logical Reasons for Each Type’s Immunities

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Dark Dark types are immune to Psychic types, meaning that they receive no damage:
    • Psychic - Evil can corrupt and control the minds of common people. Plus, fear of the dark is one of the hardest fears to conquer.
    • Note: Not every type has an immunity. There are currently only 7 types (out of 18) with an immunity.
  2. Fairy types are immune to Dragon types, meaning that they receive no damage:
    • Dragon - Mythology and fables often depict Dragons as evil and Fairies as heroic. Plus, magic usually defeats mythical creatures.
  3. Flying types are immune to Ground types, meaning that they receive no damage:
    • Ground - Flying types don’t touch the ground, so their attacks can’t affect them. Plus, grounded foes simply can't reach flying targets far above them.
  4. Ghost types are immune to Fighting and Normal types, meaning that they receive no damage:
    • Fighting - Ghosts are incorporeal, meaning that punches pass right through them.
    • Normal - Living things can’t touch ghosts. The physical and spirit worlds generally don't interact under normal circumstances.
  5. Ground types are immune to Electric types, meaning that they receive no damage:
    • Electric - Ground types are naturally insulated against electricity, preventing the charges from travelling into them.
  6. Normal types are immune to Ghost types, meaning that they receive no damage:
    • Ghost - The physical and spirit worlds generally don't interact under normal circumstances.
  7. Steel types are immune to Poison types, meaning that they receive no damage:
    • Poison - Steel isn't alive, nor is it porous enough for the poison to penetrate it even if it was.

Factors that Affect Weaknesses and Resistances

PDF download Download Article
  1. Understanding a pokémon’s weaknesses, resistances, and immunities can be a bit more complex when they have more than 1 type. Advantages and disadvantages can stack up if both of the pokémon’s types are weak to or resistant against the same move.[20]
    • If both types are weak against the same type, the pokémon receives 4x damage.
      • For example, Onix, a Rock and Ground-type, receives 4x damage from Water-type attacks because both Rock and Ground types are weak to Water types.
    • If both types are resistant to the same type, the pokémon receives ¼x damage.
      • For example, Toxicroak, a Fighting and Poison-type, receives ¼x damage from Bug-type attacks because both Fighting and Poison are resistant to Bug types.
    • Each single type is still weak and resistant to its normal types. For instance, a Water and Psychic-type pokémon (like Starmie) is weak to Electric, Grass, Bug, Ghost, and Dark types.
    • If a dual-type pokémon has a type with an immunity, it still does not receive damage from those attacks. For instance, a Grass and Fairy-type pokémon (like Cottonee) does not receive damage from Dragon types.
  2. In the games, when a pokémon uses an attack with the same typing as its own type(s), it gets a 50% boost to its attack power. This can make a big difference in battle.[21]
    • For example:
      • If Aron, a Steel-type, uses Metal Claw, a Steel-type move, it deals 1.5x damage.
      • If Venusaur, a Grass and Poison-type, uses Leaf Storm, a Grass-type move, it deals 1.5x damage.
    • The STAB advantage stacks up by 0.5x if the move is super effective, too.
      • If Pikachu, an Electric-type, uses Thunder, an Electric-type move, against a Flying-type pokémon, it deals 3x damage.
      • If Simisear, a Fire-type, uses Flame Burst, a Fire-type move, against a Grass and Bug-type pokémon, it deals 6x damage.
  3. Weather can affect your pokémon's effectiveness in a battle by boosting the strength of certain move types, or by changing the typings of specific Pokémon. Watch out, because your opponent’s weather moves can harm you, too.[22]
    • For example:
      • Harsh Sunlight buffs Fire-type moves and debuffs Water-type moves
      • Rain buffs Water-type moves and debuffs Fire-type moves.
      • Hail deals small amounts of damage to most pokémon on each turn, but doesn’t harm Ice-types.
      • Sandstorms deal small amounts of damage each turn to most pokémon except Rock, Ground, and Steel types.
    • Castform will change its typing from Normal to Fire, Water, or Ice during harsh sunlight, rain, or hail, respectively.
  4. All pokémon have a special ability that gives them an extra advantage in battle. Some abilities affect the bearer, while others affect their allies or opponents. Get pokémon with abilities that will help your team, and be sure to watch out for other pokémon using their abilities against you. For example:[23]
    • Levitate is an ability that affects the bearer, making them immune to Ground-type attacks. For instance, Mismagius and Weezing can have the Levitate ability.
    • Intimidate is an ability that affects your opponent, lowering their Attack stat. For instance, Gyarados and Mabosstiff can have the Intimidate ability.
    • Most pokémon have 2 abilities to choose from. Don't be afraid to catch another pokémon with the ability that you’d prefer for it to have!
      • For instance, Impidimp can have the Frisk or Prankster ability. If you catch an Impidimp with the Frisk ability but want one with Prankster, simply capture another Impidimp!
  5. Held items provide various effects to the Pokémon holding them. Some of the categories include:
    • Berries - Some weaken the effects of super effective moves, while others heal or cure status conditions.[24]
    • Type-enhancing objects - For instance, the Magnet boosts Electric-type moves by 20% when a pokémon holds it, while Soft Sand boosts Ground-type moves by 20% (10% prior to Gen IV).[25]
    • Gems - These work similarly to type-enhancers, but provide a one-time 30% boost (50% in Gen V) before being consumed.[26]
    • Mega Stones - Allows the respective Pokémon to Mega Evolve.[27]
    • Memories - Changes the typing of a Silvally with the RKS System ability, along the typing of its Multi-Attack.[28]
      • Plates perform the same role with Arceus and its Judgement move, with the added benefit of working like type-enhancers for all other Pokémon.
    • Z-Crystals - Allows the holder to perform powerful Z-moves.[29]

How do I tell if I'm incorrectly remembering something when it comes to Pokemon weaknesses?
    Joshua
    Joshua
    Community Answer
Ask yourself if the one being super effective against the other makes sense. If it doesn't, and you can't explain to yourself how it is, then it's probably wrong. If you still can't decide, do some research on the Pokémon type weaknesses.
  • Question
What combo of Pokemon will defeat the second Kahuna in Pokemon Ultra Moon?
    Hagukanan
    Hagukanan
    Top Answerer
Kahuna Olivia uses Rock type Pokemon, so you'll want some fighting types on your team. Harayama and Bewear are some good choices.
  • Question
Is Eevee, as a Normal-type Pokémon, weak to Sylveon's Fairy-type attacks?
    BlokPlaysGames
    BlokPlaysGames
    Top Answerer
No, the Normal type is not weak to the Fairy type. However, a Sylveon could still deal super effective damage to an Eevee if it knows a Fighting-type move, such as Double Kick, which is super effective against Normal-type Pokémon.

Tips

  • It can really help to use visual scenarios to recall things that you want to memorize. Words are easy to forget, but if you realize that, say, dragons (traditionally) breathe fire, thus resisting both fire and grass (it just burns it down), you'll have less trouble remembering each type matchup.
  • Bug and Fighting types are the only ones that mutually resist each other.
  • Think of Fire, Water, and Grass-types (the starter types) as rock, paper, and scissors. Rock breaks scissors, scissors cut paper, paper covers rock.

Tips from our Readers

  • Look up your Pokemon on a website like Bulbapedia if they're a dual type or you can't remember what they are.
  • In games, you can usually select the Pokémon in your party or look in the Pokédex to find out its typing.
