If you’ve been on TikTok lately, you might’ve seen videos tagged #GriffinMethod, with their audio all messed up for some reason. What’s going on? Turns out there is a reason, and it’s simpler than you think. We’ll fill you in on what the Griffin Method is, where it came from, and how to do it yourself.

Griffin Method Explained

According to content creator Jemaree Jay, the Griffin Method is an editing style on TikTok where videos are sped up and slowed down at certain points to make them funnier and more engaging. It was started by user @griffintomaino, and has caught on as part of a trend, with other users copying the style.

What is the TikTok Griffin Method?

  1. Content creator Jemaree Jay explains that the Griffin Method is when people edit their videos so that their voice speeds up or slows down at certain times, sometimes randomly.[1] The idea is that it makes the video more humorous and interesting, so the audience is more engaged and the video might go viral.
    • That’s why when you see TikToks tagged “#GriffinMethod” or with “Griffin Method” in the description, they’re usually videos of people talking to the camera—whether they’re explaining something, ranting, or telling jokes—since that’s where the method works best.

Griffin Method Origin

  1. In late January 2025, the user @griffintomaino began to post videos with warped audio and no explanation for the effect. In the videos, @griffintomaino covers many different humorous topics, but in all of them, the audio is edited. Since then, people have been mimicking the effect and calling it the “Griffin Method.”
    • The videos got thousands of views, and a few months later, @griffintomaino made a video addressing the trend, saying he’s cool with other people using it… except the user Dillon Latham, who’s singled out as part of a joke.
    • Since then, people have been using the Griffin Method mostly on videos of themselves ranting about a topic.

Using the Griffin Method

  1. Either record your video using your phone’s camera app, then open it in TikTok using the “+” icon at the bottom of the app, or record it right in TikTok. Once you have the video loaded, press the playback ribbon icon on the right toolbar to open the playback settings.
  2. Once you’re in the playback settings, you’ll see a menu of different editing options. Find the “Speed” option, which looks like a timer. Then, in the speed menu, tap “Curve” to edit the speed of the video on a curve graph. Select “Custom” to more easily edit the video moment-by-moment.
  3. You’ll see a graph that shows a straight line with dots. Each of those dots is grabbable. Grab one and drag it higher on the graph to make that portion of the video faster, or lower to make it slower. Mix up the speed of your video until some parts are slow and some are fast, then tap “Save” and upload the TikTok like normal.
    • You can preview the video while you edit it. For the best effect, speed up and slow down the video at funny times.
    • Slow down the video when you say something important, and speed it up in between.
