When Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby were first released, they offered a host of online features, like Wonder Trades: a special type of online trade that would allow you to receive a random Pokémon from a random player. Unfortunately, Nintendo closed down their online servers for 3DS and Wii U in April 2024—but there are still a couple of traditional trading options still available in-game, like local and in-game trades. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know, so you can get the most out of this 3DS classic.

Can you still do Wonder Trades in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire?

No, you can’t do Wonder Trades anymore. Nintendo closed down their online servers for all 3DS and Wii U systems in April 2024, so all the online features from all 3DS games are now discontinued, including the Wonder Trade feature. Local trades, however, are still available.

How do you do a Wonder Trade?

  1. Nintendo has closed down the servers for all Wii U and 3DS systems, discontinuing many Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby features in the process. One of these now-discontinued features is the Wonder Trade—now that the servers are closed down, there’s no way to do it.[1]
    • Local Pokémon trading doesn’t rely on these servers, so these features aren’t impacted by the server closure. With local trades, you and your trading partner are in control over what Pokémon you trade, while the Pokémon you receive in a wonder trade is totally random.

How to Trade Locally

  1. As the name suggests, local wireless trading requires both devices to be close together.
    • Check that you both have StreetPass enabled in your 3DS settings. Although Nintendo disabled 3DS online services, most StreetPass features are still available.[2]
  2. You can find it on the PlayNav screen in-game, along with the Pokémon-Amie and Super Training widgets.
  3. Assuming that your friend is already added on your device, their icon should automatically pop up if they have their game open.
  4. This button sits above the “Wonder Trade” option. Proceed with your trade as you normally would.
