Legendary Pokémon Reshiram and Zekrom are the poster children of the Black/White and Black 2/White 2 series—so, it’s only fair that you want to catch these Pokémon and add them to your Pokédex. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know about catching these two dragon Pokémon, along with some tips and tricks to help you maximize your chances of succeeding in battle.

Things You Should Know

  • Beat N on the 2nd floor of his castle to receive a Light or Dark Stone. Take this Stone to Dragonspiral Tower to fight and catch Reshiram or Zekrom.
  • Get the other Legendary Pokémon (Zekrom if you’re playing White 2, Reshiram if you’re playing Black 2) by trading via infrared or local wireless.
  • Stock up on plenty of Pokéballs and save your game before battling Reshiram or Zekrom.

How to Catch Zekrom and Reshiram

  1. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, you have to battle N, one of the game’s adversaries—but this can only be done after you’ve defeated the Elite 4 and Pokémon Champion. If you haven’t completed that stage of the game yet, be sure to do so.
  2. Starting from the Pokémon League, travel along the mountainside (below where the two Veterans are) until you find a Zoroark. Then, follow the Zoroark—it’ll take you to a staircase within a cave, which leads to N’s Castle.[1]

  3. If you’re playing White 2, he’ll challenge you with Reshiram; if you’re playing Black 2, he’ll use Zekrom.
    • These Pokémon will both be level 70, so make sure your team is strong enough to take them on. This shouldn’t be a problem, however, considering you’ve already become the Pokémon Champion.
  4. Once you’ve successfully defeated N’s Zekrom or Reshiram, the dragon will disappear and become a Dark Stone (Zekrom) or Light Stone (Reshiram). At this point, N will instruct you to take the Stone to Dragonspiral Tower, allowing you to battle and catch the Legendary Pokémon for yourself.
    • You’ll get the Light Stone/Reshiram if you’re playing White 2 and the Dark Stone/Zekrom if you’re playing Black 2.
  5. Head northwest out of Icirrus City to reach the Dragonspiral Tower—you’ll have to take a path through the forest to reach it.[2] Make your way through the Tower; once you reach the 7th Floor, your Dark Stone or Light Stone will automatically activate and transform into Zekrom or Reshiram, respectively.[3]
  6. Like you did before, battle the Zekrom or Reshiram; however, your goal this go around is to catch the Pokémon rather than make it faint. Continue battling the Pokémon until it’s low enough to catch. Be forewarned, though—it will likely take many tries before you successfully catch it![4]

Can you catch both Zekrom and Reshiram in the same game?

  1. Unfortunately, Black 2 and White 2 only let you catch one of the dragons—Reshiram if you’re playing White, and Zekrom if you’re playing Black. While Nintendo no longer supports the Global Trading System for these games, it’s still possible to trade with a friend using the game’s IR or local wireless technology.[5]
    • Infrared (IR): You and a friend both open up the C-Gear in your game on your DS/3DS. Position your DS systems so your game slots are each facing one another; then, tap IR along with “Trade.”
    • Local wireless: Head to the top floor of any Pokémon Center within the game and interact with the NPC on the left side of the screen. Then, enter the Union Room. If your friend does the same thing in their game, you both should be able to trade.

Best Practices for Catching Legendaries

  1. Save before you battle Reshiram or Zekrom. Always save your game in case you accidentally cause the Legendary Pokémon to faint. If this happens, simply reboot your game and reload from where you saved before.
  2. If you still have a Master Ball on hand, use that to catch your Zekrom or Reshiram—with its guaranteed catch rate, it’ll make your battle a cinch. If you don’t have one available, stock up on Ultra Balls. Timer Balls can also be handy, though they’ll be more effective in a battle with countless turns.
  3. Like before, the Zekrom or Reshiram will be at 70, which lends its attacks plenty of power. Make sure that your own Pokémon are toughened up and at a high enough level to take on the Legendary Pokémon.
  4. Putting a Pokémon to Sleep makes it a lot easier to catch, so make sure to have a Pokémon on your team that knows a Sleep-inducing move like Hypnosis, Sleep Powder, Grass Whistle, or Spore.[6] Freezing a Pokémon also makes it easier to catch, but it’s a lot easier to Sleep a Pokémon than it is to Freeze it.[7]
    • Moves like Blizzard, Ice Beam, Ice Fang, and Ice Punch all have a 10% chance of inflicting the Frozen status effect.[8]
    • Whatever you do, steer clear of moves that inflict Poison or Burn on the Pokémon. These will cause continuous damage that will eventually make the Pokémon faint.
  5. False Swipe is a unique ability that will never inflict lethal damage, but will instead leave the enemy Pokémon at 1 HP. This is incredibly helpful when fighting a Legendary Pokémon, as it will prevent it from fainting during the battle.[9]

You can only catch the Pokémon that is in your game. However, you can always trade with a friend who has the legendary opposite of yours.
  • Question
How I can get Zekrom in Pokemon Black 2 without using a Masterball?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Just weaken it. (Using paralysis or sleep is a good idea.) After you weaken it enough, you can use dusk balls at night (which are twice as powerful as ultra balls at night) or nest balls.
  • Question
If I accidentally defeat Zekrom and save my game, can he respawn if I beat the Elite 4 again?

Yes, as long as you return to the tower after you have defeated the Elite 4 again.
