Unlock this Psychic- and Grass-type Pokémon with and without hacks

Back when Pokémon Crystal was first released in the early 2000s, only Japanese players were able to catch Celebi with the help of the Pokémon Mobile Phone System GB (an item that wasn’t available internationally).[1] With the help of emulators and the (now discontinued) Virtual Console for 3DS, players all over the world can catch this Legendary Pokémon. We’ll walk you through the proper cheat codes to use on a Game Boy Color emulator, along with the right steps to take if you have the Virtual Console on your 3DS.

How do you catch Celebi in Pokémon Crystal?

You can catch a Celebi in Pokémon Crystal by entering the code 01FB04D2 or 91FB04D2 into the cheats menu of your Game Boy Color emulator. With the 3DS Virtual Console, Celebi can be caught through the in-game GS Ball event.

  1. Access this cheat window by hitting the “Cheats” menu within your emulator. Label the cheat as “Celebi” in the “Description” box, and then enter 01FB04D2 in the “Code” box. The next Pokémon you encounter in the wild will now be a Celebi![2]
    • If this cheat code doesn’t work, try 91FB04D2 instead.
    • Want a shiny Celebi? Enter the code 910730D2 in your cheat console (in addition to the Celebi code that’s already there). The next Pokémon you find should be a shiny Celebi—just keep in mind that the cheat prevents you from being able to run from battle.

  1. The Celebi event only unlocks after you’ve defeated the Elite 4 as well as Pokémon Champion Lance.
  2. Once you move around inside the building, an NPC will speak to you and give you a GS Ball, which is automatically put with your things.[3]
  3. Let Kurt inspect the GS Ball—he will take it and begin his investigation, which lasts until midnight.
    • If you’d like to speed things up, save and reboot your game. As it restarts, press the
      SELECT
+ B + the down arrow of the control pad. Release B + the down arrow (while still pressing
      SELECT
) and press down on the up and left control pad arrows instead. Let go of
      SELECT
and submit the password you receive from this site.
  4. Head north in the forest and cut down a tree to reach a shrine.
    • Kurt will give the GS Ball back to you when you talk.
  5. Celebi will appear once you’ve inserted the ball, so make sure you’ve saved your game beforehand! Enter the battle and do your best to catch Celebi; if something goes wrong, simply reload your game and try again.
    • Want a shiny Celebi? Keep resetting your game until the Celebi appears light pink when it spawns—that’s how you know it’s shiny. This can take a lot of time and patience, though, so stick with it!

Legitimately obtaining Celebi in Pokémon Gold is no longer possible. Originally, you could acquire it through a specific, now-discontinued event in Japan. This event involved connecting a Japanese mobile phone to your Game Boy and participating in a special service.
