Beauty Symmetry: The Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio (also known as Divine Proportion) is a ratio believed to make up the perfect balance of facial proportions. It’s considered the benchmark of facial beauty and societal beauty standards and is used by cosmetologists and cosmetic surgeons as a baseline for facial structure.

There are a few baselines for the Golden Ratio, including:

  • The face must be 1.618 times longer than it is wide.
  • The distance from the top of the nose to the center of the lips should be 1.618 times the distance from the center of the lips to the chin.
  • The hairline to the upper eyelid distance is 1.618 times the length of the top of the upper eyebrow to the lower eyelid.
  • The bottom lip is slightly fuller than the upper lip, with a ratio of 1:1.6.
  • The length of the ear should be the same as the length of the nose.
  • The eye's width should be similar to the distance between the eyes.

The Golden Ratio serves as a guide, not a set of rules. Everyone’s facial features are different, and no one perfectly matches the Golden Ratio. The ratio is used as a guideline and doesn’t signify beauty as a whole. Even the most beautiful celebrities have failed facial beauty analysis under the Golden Ratio. So, if your features don’t match this guideline, worry not!
