How to Figure Out Your Makeup Type

  • Consider your face shape and features. Different face shapes tend to look best with different types of makeup, so figuring out your face shape is key.[1] For example, if you have a heart-shaped face, you may want to use blush to play up your amazing cheeks and cheekbones. (If you’re not sure what your face type is, check out this guide).
  • Pay attention to your skin’s undertones. In general, if you have cool undertones, you tend to look better in cool makeup colors, and if you have warm undertones, you tend to look better in warm makeup colors. (Not sure which one you have? Check out this guide).
    • For example, a cool-toned person would look better with a greyish smokey eye and purplish-pink lipstick, while a warm-toned person would look better with a brownish smokey eye and peachy-pink lipstick.
  • Factor in your vibe and aesthetic. Your makeup should complement your style and overall vibe.[2] For example, if you have a casual, laid-back aesthetic, a super glam makeup look probably wouldn’t be the right call for you. Similarly, if you tend to dress in bold, eye-catching looks, a natural, minimalistic makeup look likely wouldn’t feel right. It’s all about showing off your unique style and personality.
  • Wear what makes you comfortable. At the end of the day, makeup is a form of self-expression, so the most important thing is that it makes you feel beautiful. You don’t need to follow any specific rules if you don’t want to—just go with the makeup look that you feel most confident in!
