Find Language What Does It Mean to Be “Pretty”?
Although there are definitely societal pressures to fit specific beauty standards, the truth of the matter is that “pretty” means different things to different people, and everyone has their own ideas about what’s attractive or unattractive. It sounds corny, but beauty really is in the eye of the beholder![1] Here are some important things about beauty and prettiness to keep in mind:
- Many current beauty standards are unrealistic. With the explosion of social media, which allows people to edit their photos to present a perfectly polished image to the world, it’s easy to get caught up in unattainable beauty standards.[2] It’s important to remember that the images you see online or in magazines don’t represent how people look in real life. Even the people in those photos don’t look exactly like that when they’re just walking down the street!
- Definitions of beauty have changed over time. What was considered attractive and desirable hundreds of years ago is very different from what’s considered attractive and desirable now.[3] There are even notable differences in beauty standards between this decade and the last one! So, if you don’t feel like you fit the ideal in this current moment, remember that these things are always shifting, but being true to yourself and confident in who you are is timeless.
- Attractiveness isn’t just determined by physical things. It’s a lot more complicated than that! Things like having a good sense of humor, a uniq ue sense of style, a confident attitude, or a kind personality can all contribute to your attractiveness as a person. Little things like having good posture or hygiene can also make a huge difference.[4] Try not to fixate on the physical things you might deem imperfections—at the end of the day, prettiness comes from who you are in your entirety, not from individual physical features.
