How to Add Auto Captions to Instagram Stories

Adding captions to your Instagram Story is simple, and it makes the videos you post much more accessible. Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, as well as those who have their sound off, will be able to easily understand any audio in your video. After using the Captions sticker to automatically create your captions, you can edit the text and customize its style. This wikiHow article will teach you how to add and edit auto-generated captions on your Instagram Story.

Steps

  1. The app icon is a white camera on a multicolored background.
    • Make sure your Instagram app is up-to-date. Otherwise, the auto-caption feature may not be available.
  2. This button is located at the top left of the screen directly under the Instagram logo. It is represented by your profile picture and a small blue + button.
    • Alternatively, you can tap the white plus button towards the top right of the screen, then press Story.

  3. You can record a video by holding down on the circular white button, or you can upload a video by clicking the small square in the bottom-left corner, then selecting a video.[1]
    • If you have not uploaded a Story before, you may have to allow Instagram access to your camera, photos, and videos by accepting the prompts on screen.
    • Be sure you have the Story tab selected at the bottom of the screen.
  4. This button is located towards the top right of the screen and opens the stickers menu.
  5. This blue sticker is located in the third row of options. If you do not see it, you can also search for Captions using the Search bar at the top of the menu.
    • You will see a message that reads “Transcribing audio…” while your captions are being generated.
  6. Now that your captions have automatically been generated, you can change the words, location, font, text color, and background to personalize your Story.[2]
    • Edit your captions by tapping the text, then tapping a specific word you would like to change and typing your correction.
    • Move your captions by dragging them with your finger. You can also rotate and resize them by dragging or making a pinching or pulling movement with a second finger.
    • Explore the different font options by pressing each of the four buttons in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
    • Change the color of your text by tapping the color wheel in the top middle of the screen, then using the color picker or pre-selected colors at the bottom of the screen.
    • Add a background highlight for increased visibility by tapping the A icon in the top middle of your screen. Tap the button multiple times to cycle through the available highlight options.
  7. Press the Your story button in the bottom left to post your video![3]

You have the option to upload it again or share it as a reel, then post it as an Instagram story. The content will automatically loop in the story.

Tips

  • Unfortunately, the Captions sticker is currently unavailable in non-English-speaking countries. Instead, try adding text overlays as your video progresses to summarize what is happening or using a third party caption-generating app.
