How to Call Someone on a Computer

This wikiHow teaches you how to use your computer to place a phone call. Some popular apps you can use to make voice calls are Viber and Skype.

Using Viber

   Install Viber on your Android or iPhone. Viber is a free app you can use to place voice and video calls from your computer. You can’t install Viber on your computer until you’ve created an account on your phone.

   Go to https://www.viber.com/ in a web browser on your computer. Now that you’ve set up Viber on your phone, you can download the app to your PC or Mac.

   Click Get Viber Desktop. This will download the installer file to your computer.

   Install Viber on your PC or Mac. Open the file you downloaded to install Viber. The on-screen instructions will take you through the installation process.

   Click Yes on the “Welcome to Viber” screen. This tells Viber that you have an account.

   Enter your phone number and click Continue. Use the phone number connected to your Viber account. A QR code will appear on the screen.

   Click Scan with phone.

   Scan the QR code with your phone. Your phone will automatically detect the code. Once detected, a “Success” screen will appear on the computer.

   Click Open Viber. The application will launch for the first time.

    Click the “New” icon. It’s the square with a pencil at its top-right corner, directly to the right of the Search bar.

    Select the person you want to call. Scroll through the contacts in the left column, then click the circle beside the person you want to call. A check mark will appear in the circle.

    Click Start. It’s the purple button in the right panel. This opens a text conversation with the selected person.

    Click the phone icon. It’s at the top-right corner of the conversation.

    Click Free Viber Call. This places a call to the selected contact. The call will be connected once the other person answers.

Using Skype

   Open Skype on your PC or Mac. You’ll find it in the All Apps section of the Start menu in Windows, or the Applications folder in macOS.

   • If you haven’t yet installed Skype, you can do so for free at https://www.skype.com.

   Sign in with your Skype username and password. If you’re already signed in, you can skip this step.

   Click the dialpad button. It looks like the number keys on a phone.

   • You must have Skype Out credits to make phone calls to regular telephone numbers.

   Dial the phone number.

   • If your Skype credits are at $0.00, click Add Skype Credit to purchase more.

   Click the phone icon to place the call. You will hear the outbound ringtone as the call is placed. Once the person you're calling answers, the call will be connected.

   • Make sure your microphone is enabled and your speakers are turned up.
