Did you know…
…Nina Dobrev gave a forgettable first audition?
That's right, Dobrev might not have gotten the part of Elena if the casting directors only looked at her initial audition—in fact, they apparently couldn't even remember her first audition, it was so unimpressive. But Dobrev was sick at the time, so that might explain its forgettableness. She made up for it by sending in a second audition tape, which clearly did the trick!
…and Ian Somerhalder totally bombed his?
Possibly because of "too much coffee" or a "B12 shot," Somerhalder says, his first audition was a total mess. He went back and re-auditioned, though, and as with Dobrev, the second time was a charm!
…Ashlee Simpson and Ashley Tisdale were considered for the role of Elena?
In the Vampire Diaries books, Elena is blond with blue eyes, but co-creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson intentionally went in the opposite direction, casting the brown-eyed brunette Dobrev as Elena instead. As Dobrev said, "Kevin specifically told me that the angle we wanted to go for was the relatable, nice, girl next door, who the audience roots for. So he made a conscious decision to change that."
…David Gallagher from 7th Heaven was considered for the role of Damon?
We can see it…but we can't help picturing him as a kid in 7th Heaven—and apparently, neither could the show's creators. However, he was eventually cast as a werewolf in the series.
…the show's co-creators initially thought the show would be a flop?
Co-creators Williamson and Julie Plec "were convinced that the launch would be the most embarrassing thing that ever hit network television and [they] would be dead in the water," as Plec told The Hollywood Reporter.[1]
"We were convinced this would be the thing that spawned 1,000 articles about how vampires are over." We're grateful they went ahead with it despite their doubts—it ended up being a megahit!
