The World of TRON
TRON laid the foundation for so many other fictional worlds, especially digital worlds based on video games. But TRON remains one-of-a-kind, populated with strange and creative characters. But how does it all work? Here’s a primer:
Users are human beings who use computers, like you! They create the digital worlds that TRON centers on, but most of them aren’t even aware of what’s going on behind the screens. Users are seen as gods in the world of TRON.
Programs are digital, electronic beings created by users. Every program looks exactly like their user, but they’re separate beings with their own personalities and wills. Programs live on energy and are made of circuitry.
Kevin Flynn is a programmer who created much of the world of TRON, but his work was stolen by a competitor and turned into a self-aware computer program. While Flynn investigates the theft, he gets digitized and plunged into cyberspace.
ENCOM is the software company Flynn worked for, which eventually develops the mainframe and becomes the biggest gaming company in the world, full of shady deals and deep conspiracies.
Tron is a program in the mainframe who’s a prisoner of MCP, the Master Control Program that was created to oversee the mainframe. Tron is forced to play gladiator-like games, since he believes in Users, which the MCP considers blasphemy.
