Common Character Archetypes

The Hero: The protagonist/main character who goes on some kind of quest or journey, overcoming obstacles along the way. The Hero is usually morally good with a strong sense of justice.

The Mentor: The wise, typically older character who helps guide the hero on their journey. They may or may not have some type of magical ability in addition to their powerful intellect and knowledge.[1]

The Best Friend/Sidekick: The lovable, loyal, and usually funny companion to the main character. The sidekick usually embarks on the quest with the hero, and they’re often essential to the hero’s success.

The Lover: The Lover is an idealistic, hopeful, and kindhearted character archetype. They’re not as much of a fighter as The Hero, but they have the same sense of goodness and morality. They also tend to be artistic or creative.

The Villain: The antagonist of the story who gets in the main character’s way as they try to achieve their goal. Villains are technically the “bad guys,” but they’re often alluring, complicated, and fascinating, too.[2]
