If you have a Metro by T-Mobile (formerly MetroPCS) phone, the device is carrier locked for 365 days after it is initially activated. As long as it's been longer than 365 days, and the phone has not been reported lost or stolen, Metro will unlock your phone so you can use it on any network. Read on to learn how to unlock your Metro phone, and what to do if you run into problems.

Unlocking a Metro Phone

If your phone was activated at least 365 days ago and there are no alerts on your account, Metro will unlock it for free so you can use it on any carrier. The process happens automatically 2 days after the term ends. If the phone doesn't unlock automatically, check your settings or contact Metro at 888-8-METRO-8.

Contacting Metro to Unlock Your Phone

PDF download Download Article
  1. If your phone is still locked after 365 days, contact Metro to unlock it. In some cases, you may need to have a customer service representative unlock your phone for you. If you live near a Metro by T-Mobile retail location, you can visit the store with your phone and ask them to unlock it. You can also call Metro by dialing *611 from your Metro phone, or by calling 888-8-METRO-8 from any phone.[8]
    • When you speak to Metro, they may ask for the phone number on your account, the name on your account, your account billing PIN, and possibly your email address.
    • When having customer service unlock your phone, the instructions they provide you will vary depending on the make and model of your phone. For example, you may have to turn off your phone, insert the SIM card of the new network, turn the phone on, and enter a code when prompted.

Unlocking Apps and Services

  1. If you want to unlock your Metro phone early, an unlocking service may help. Just keep in mind that unlocking services–typically a website or an app designed to remove a phone's carrier lock before eligibility requirements are met–don't always work, and many are scams. We don't have any specific recommendations for a service to try, but you can try searching for "metro phone unlocking service" and researching any companies that pop up.
    • To unlock your phone with an unlocking service, you will need to provide the service with your IMEI number. To get the IMEI, open your phone dialer and dial *#06#.

Warnings

  • Unlocking the phone while still within the agreed time period of the contract will void any warranty on the phone. If your account is not paid up, you will be responsible for all remaining payments.
  • Unlocking your MetroPCS phone does not guarantee that your device will be fully compatible with services and features offered by other wireless providers. Keep this factor in mind when using your unlocked MetroPCS phone on another network.
