You just finished gaming on your new PS5 and are ready to power it off for the night, but you don’t see a power button on your console or controller. There are actually two different ways to turn off a PS5, and you can choose whichever is most convenient. You can either turn the console off directly or, if you’re seated far away from it, by pressing a few buttons on your controller. In this article, we’ll show you both simple methods.

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:

Power off directly from the console

  1. The PS5 console has a power button, but because of the discrete design it is not visible at first glance. At the bottom of the black strip that runs down the console, you will find two thin black buttons.[1] The bottom one is the power button.
  2. Press the button and hold it until you hear two beeps.[2] This should take about three seconds.
    • Be sure to wait for a second beep; if you only hear one, that means the PS5 will go into rest mode instead of turning off.[3]

Power off using the controller

  1. The PS5 button is shaped like the PlayStation symbol and located between the two thumbsticks.
  2. When you press the PS5 button, a menu will appear at the bottom of the screen. Select the power icon, the last one on the right.
  3. Finally, select “Turn Off PS5” from the options that appear. [4]

Why won't my PS5 controller turn on?

You should first check if the battery is dead, as this is the most common reason controllers fail to turn on. If the battery isn't the issue, try connecting the controller directly to the console. If these troubleshooting steps do not work, you might need to seek repair or replace the controller.
