PDF download Download Article

Does someone keep tagging you in Facebook posts that you don’t want to see (or don’t want others to see)? No worries—we’re here to help. While you can’t directly stop someone from tagging you in posts, there are a couple of different ways to limit who can see posts you’re tagged in on Facebook and when the posts you’re tagged in show up on your profile in the first place. Read on, and we’ll show you how to manage your Facebook account settings on your desktop, iPhone, or Android and get more control over those tagged posts!

Stopping People from Tagging You on Facebook

  • You can’t stop people from tagging you in posts, but you can restrict who sees those posts on your profile or review them to prevent them from appearing.
  • Option 1: Click your profile photo and navigate to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging. Under Tagging and implied mentions, set who can see tagged posts.
  • Option 2: Navigate to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging. Under Reviewing, click the toggle to enable reviewing posts you’re tagged in.

  1. Whether you’re on iPhone or Android, you’ll find the Menu option on the bottom right of the screen when you open the Facebook app.
  2. You’ll see the Settings & Privacy option on the Menu screen with the image of a grey gear next to it. Clicking Settings & Privacy will open up a dropdown menu.

  3. It’s the first option you’ll see from the menu after selecting Settings & Privacy.
  4. On the app’s Settings page, scroll down and select Profile and tagging (located under the Audience and visibility section).
  5. There, you can decide who can see posts you’re tagged in (and choose between everyone, friends only, a specific number of friends of your choice, or only you). This will limit the visibility of posts you’re tagged in on your profile![1]

  1. In your mobile app on iPhone or Android, look for Menu on the bottom right side of the screen (with three solid lines above the Menu label) and tap it.
  2. Next, find Settings & Privacy on the Menu page (with a grey gear next to it) and tap on that option to open a dropdown menu.
  3. This is the first option in the dropdown menu; tap on it to open the mobile app’s settings page.
  4. Scroll down to Audience and visibility and tap on the Profile and tagging option. Now, you should be on the page where you can adjust review settings!
  5. Scroll down the Profile and tagging page until you see the Reviewing heading. Under that, you’ll see two toggle options: one for reviewing tags that people add to your posts and one for reviewing posts you’re tagged in. Click on each toggle to turn reviews on (or off, as you prefer).[2]

Changing Privacy Settings (Desktop)

  1. Once logged into Facebook, navigate to your profile picture icon on the top right side of the screen and select it to access a dropdown menu. If you’ve created multiple Facebook pages, select See all profiles and pick the one you want to adjust before clicking the photo again to see the dropdown menu.[3]
  2. You’ll see several options on the dropdown menu, including Settings & Privacy; click that option to open a second dropdown menu.
  3. On the new menu, look for the Settings option—it should be the first one on the list. Select Settings to open the main settings page for your account.
  4. Scroll down the menu on the left side of the Settings screen until you see the Profile and tagging option. Click on it, and you’ll arrive at the page where you can adjust settings related to tagged Facebook posts!
  5. On the Profile and tagging page, scroll to the Tagging and implied mentions section. Click on the Who can see posts you’re tagged in on your profile? option and change the settings to suit your needs.[4]
    • You can allow everyone (on or off Facebook), friends of friends, friends only, friends except (excluding certain friends), specific friends, or only you to see posts you’re tagged in.
    • For maximum privacy, select “Only me” to stop everyone but you from seeing posts you’re tagged in on your page. Otherwise, decide how much you want to restrict tagged posts.

Reviewing Tagged Posts (Desktop)

  1. Tag reviewing means you can review posts you’re tagged in and either approve or reject them. Rejected posts will show up in other places on Facebook but won’t appear on your profile. To do this, follow the same first step above and click the profile photo on the top right of the screen.[5]
  2. The settings for reviewing tagged posts and limiting who can see tagged posts are in the same place—so after clicking on your profile photo, select Settings & Privacy from the options available.
  3. From the dropdown menu that appears, select Settings to open up your account settings.
  4. Under the Audience and visibility heading, you’ll see the Profile and tagging option; click on it to adjust the reviewing settings on your account.
  5. The Reviewing section is the last one on the Profile and tagging page. There are two toggles: one to enable reviewing tags that people add to your posts and another to enable reviewing posts you’re tagged in before they appear on your profile. Click each toggle to turn reviews on![6]
    • When enabled, the toggle will be on the right, and the rest of the button will be blue.
    • When disabled, the toggle will be on the left, and the rest of the button will be grey.
    • If security is your goal, there are additional settings you can adjust to make your Facebook account more private as needed.

Can you stop someone from tagging you on Facebook?

  1. Unfortunately, you can’t stop someone from tagging you in their post (unless you block or unfriend them), but you can control whether their posts appear on your timeline and profile. So, if you don’t want to be tagged in someone’s posts, you can at least adjust your settings to hide those posts.[7]
    • You can also change your Facebook account settings to allow everyone to see posts you’re tagged in or disable post reviewing at any time—so your setting changes aren’t permanent!
