Do you need to send a text on your iPhone that's a bit too complicated to type out? Send an audio message instead! This wikiHow article will teach you two simple ways to send an audio message on your iPhone: Using the Messages app and sharing a voice memo.

Things You Should Know

  • Open a text conversation in the Messages app and tap the blue-and-white Audio Messages icon.
  • Tap and hold the microphone as you speak.
  • When you lift your finger from the screen, your audio message will be sent automatically.

Using iMessage (Messages)

  1. Doing so will open your conversation.
    • If you can't find the conversation you need, swipe down on this screen and then type your contact's name into the Search bar at the top of the screen.
    • You can tap the box with a pencil icon in the top right corner of the screen to create a new message.
    • If you're already in a conversation with someone, you'll have to tap the Back button in the top left corner of the screen to view the "Messages" page.
  2. It's the blue icon with white soundwave lines just below the typing area. A red microphone icon will appear.

  3. Continue holding your finger to the icon until you're ready to send your message. As soon as you lift your finger from the screen, your audio message will be sent.
    • This will only work when sending a message to another person who uses iMessage. You won't be able to send audio messages to Android users.

Sharing Voice Memos

  1. Its app icon is black with a red soundwave and blue cursor. You'll find it on your Home screen or in your app library.
  2. It's at the bottom of the screen. Doing so will prompt your iPhone to start recording audio.
  3. Doing so will end the recording. You'll now see your most recent recording at the top of the "All Recordings" list.
  4. You'll see this icon to the right of the recording's name. A menu will expand.
  5. It's the second option on the menu. Your iPhone's sharing menu will appear.
  6. This option will open a new message template in the Messages app.
  7. You can start typing a contact's name, or tap + to select a contact from your Contacts list.
  8. This is the blue icon with a white arrow at the bottom-right corner of the message. Your voice memo will now be sent to the selected contact(s).
