Use third-party apps or an external device to record any WhatsApp video call on your iPhone or iPad
PDF download Download Article

The WhatsApp messaging app allows you to communicate with other WhatsApp users via voice, video, and text messaging. While you can record WhatsApp video calls with your iPhone or iPad’s built-in screen recorder, WhatsApp’s privacy restrictions may prevent you from capturing audio. If you encounter this issue, try using a third-party screen recording app.

How to Record WhatsApp Calls in iOS

  • While you can capture video from WhatsApp calls using your iPhone’s built-in screen recorder, you might not be able to record audio.
  • Try a third-party screen recording app to record both audio and video on your call.
  • If all else fails, you can record audio with an external device and add it to your captured video.

Using Third-Party Apps

  1. Although your iPhone or iPad has built-in screen recording software, it may not be able to fully capture video calls on WhatsApp. If you’re unable to record your calls with audio, try a third-party option instead. Download a screen recording app from the App Store.
    • Some popular screen recording apps include Loom Screen Recorder (free with limitations) and Record It! (requires a subscription to use most features).
  2. These apps vary slightly, but they tend to have a fairly similar interface from one app to another. If you’re using Loom, tap the Screen tab at the bottom of the screen, then make sure the mic is set to On. Tap Start Broadcast to begin the recording.[1]
    • You’ll see a red bar at the top left corner of the screen once recording starts. This bar will also tell you how much time has passed since you started recording.

  3. Make your video call on WhatsApp. You can also start the screen recording process after you’ve already started a call.
  4. When you’re done recording your call, tap the red bar at the top right corner of the screen. This will immediately end the recording.
    • You can generally view your screen capture videos from inside the screen recording app.

Using Your Built-in Screen Recorder

  1. While you might be able to partially capture WhatsApp video calls with your iPhone or iPad’s built-in screen recorder, many users are unable to record audio this way. If you want to try it anyway, we’ll explain how to do it. First, you’ll need to add the screen recorder button to your Control Center. Start by opening the Settings app.
  2. Depending on your device, you can do this by pressing the Home button or swiping up on the screen.
  3. The icon looks like a white phone handset inside a white speech bubble on a green background.
    • If you can't find the WhatsApp icon, swipe right on your device's home screen and type "WhatsApp" in the search bar at the top of the screen. Tap the WhatsApp icon when it appears in the search results.
  4. The Calls icon, which looks like a phone, appears on the bottom of the screen.
  5. The icon looks like a + sign.
  6. WhatsApp makes a video connection to this contact.[2]
  7. This turns the microphone from off to on, allowing Screen Recording to capture audio as well as video.
    • The microphone may not work with WhatsApp and other apps that restrict your iPhone’s screen recording features.
  8. After three seconds, Screen Recording begins recording all activity on your screen.
    • A red banner appears at the top of your screen when Screen Recording is active.
  9. Your iPhone prompts you to confirm that you wish to stop Screen Recording.
    • You can find your completed Screen Recording by tapping the Camera app and tapping your Photo Library.[3]

Using an External Recording Device

  1. If you aren’t able to get around WhatsApp’s restrictions, you can always record the call externally. Since you shouldn’t have any trouble recording the video from your call using your iPhone or iPad’s built-in screen recorder, all you really need to capture is the sound.
    • You can use another phone or tablet, a computer with a mic, or a standalone digital recording device.
    • Apple devices have a built-in recording app called Voice Memos. On a Windows computer or Android device, you can use the native Voice Recorder app.
  2. If you want, use the screen recorder method to capture the video from your WhatsApp call. At the same time, start recording the sound on your external device. Stop both recordings when you’re done.
  3. If you want to be able to listen to the audio and watch the video of the call at the same time, you can easily add your recorded audio to your video using any basic video editing app.
    • Add the audio track on your iPhone or iPad with iMovie. Email or AirDrop the recording to yourself or upload it to a cloud service so you can access it on your device.
    • You can also transfer both files to a computer and add the sound using a desktop video editing app.
