Print your ChatGPT conversations for reference or safekeeping
PDF download Download Article

If you are an avid user of ChatGPT, you may be wondering how you can save physical copies of your conversations for later. While ChatGPT does keep a history of your chats, you may want to print out your conversations to have a hard copy in case you need to reference them later or show someone else. While there isn't a simple "print" button on the ChatGPT website, we'll teach you four methods you can try to print out your ChatGPT conversations.

Ways to Print ChatGPT Conversations

  • You can export your ChatGPT chat history directly from the website, which you can then download and print.
  • If you don't want to fuss with data exporting or extensions, you can simply copy and paste your ChatGPT conversation into a text file to print.
  • Try a custom GPT that will format answers in your conversations and export them for you.

Method 1 of 4:

Export from ChatGPT

  1. If you're not already logged in to ChatGPT, sign in. ChatGPT has a native export function that will send you a copy of your prompt/response chat history.[1]
  2. This will pull up a contextual menu.

  3. It has a cog wheel icon next to it, and is likely one of the only menu items, especially if you have a free account with ChatGPT.[2]
  4. It has a cylinder icon next to it. It is also likely one of the only menu items, especially if you have a free account with ChatGPT.[3]
  5. This will bring up a pop-up explaining what data exporting will do and what to expect. ChatGPT will email you a download link where you can download your ChatGPT history, and that link will expire after 24 hours.[4]
  6. It may take some time for your ChatGPT history to be sent to you, especially if you have a lot of conversations saved.[5]
  7. Once your chat data is ready, it will be emailed to you. The email subject is "ChatGPT - Your data export is ready".
  8. Click on Download data export to download a zipped file with your chat data inside.[6]
  9. You can unzip this file with your OS's built-in file extraction tools or use a third-party tool like WinRAR on Windows or Unzip One on Mac.
  10. The file is an HTML file, so you will be able to open it in any web browser by double-clicking it. Your chat history with ChatGPT will be displayed on this webpage.
    • You can also open the file by right-clicking (or control-clicking) it and selecting Open with > your preferred browser.
  11. You can now print the webpage or save it as a PDF for easy viewing later.
    • If you only want to print one conversation, you can copy and paste various conversations or parts of conversations into a text document to print as well.

Use an Extension

  1. There are a number of extensions that allow you to save your ChatGPT conversation history in a convenient way. These extensions will be available in your browser's extension store, which varies depending on your browser:
  2. All of the extensions for ChatGPT will be shown. You can add other search terms, such as "save", "share", or "print" to narrow down your search. Some extensions are as follows:
    • Save ChatGPT on Chrome
    • ChatGPT ConvDown on Firefox
    • Save ChatGPT to Notion on Edge and Chrome
  3. Once you have an extension that will work for you, install it via the extension page. You can then configure your extension via your browser's extension manager.
    • Each browser will work a bit differently, but most browsers place newly-installed extensions on the top bar for easy access. Most browsers also have a button on the top bar to access extensions, usually denoted by a puzzle piece.

Copy and Paste

  1. If you don't want to fuss with exporting data or installing extensions, you can simply copy and paste your ChatGPT conversations into a text file, which you can then print.
  2. You can highlight either the entire conversation or just parts of it.
  3. This will copy your text to your computer's clipboard.
  4. You can do this in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Notepad, TextEdit, or any other word processor or text file program you prefer.
  5. This will paste your text into the document.
    • If the text you copied is pasting into your document with a black background, try pressing Ctrl+ Shift+V on Windows or Option+ Shift+ Cmd+V on Mac. This will paste the text with no formatting, instead keeping it inline with the current formatting of your document.
  6. Depending on the program you're using, the print button may be in different locations. However, for most programs, you should be able to print by going to File > Print.

Custom GPT

  1. Open GPT-Print. GPT-Print is a custom GPT that has a print feature built in. Note that the builder of a custom GPT can't see the conversations you have with that GPT.
  2. Have conversations with ChatGPT like you usually would until you're ready to print.
  3. Note that only ChatGPT's responses will be exported, and they will be formatted to remove any extra explanation or conversation. Your prompts or questions will not be included in the exported document.
    • The #print function also will only print answers since the last #print function was used. For example, if you asked ChatGPT to solve a math problem and then used the #print function, the next time you used the #print function, the math problem you previously printed would not be included.
  4. You can choose from .docx, .xlsx, .html, and .pdf. You can also choose to cancel the print request.
  5. After a few seconds, ChatGPT will provide you with a downloadable file. You can then download and print that file using the program of your choice.
