While you can't post anonymously in general on Facebook, some users can create anonymous posts in Facebook groups that enable anonymous posting. When you post anonymously in a Facebook group, you can ask questions and share thoughts without others seeing your name or profile picture. This is useful if you're looking for help on an embarrassing subject or want to keep something a secret from others. In this article, we'll teach you how to post, comment, or react anonymously to a Facebook group on desktop and mobile. Note that this feature isn’t available to all users yet.

What to Know About Posting Anonymously on Facebook

Anonymous posting isn’t available for all users and groups on Facebook yet. If it is available, you can turn it on by clicking or tapping Write something at the top of the group page, then toggling on Post anonymously. If you’re using the mobile app, you can choose a nickname for your anonymous posts.

  1. Click Groups in the left-hand menu of Facebook. The icon is blue and white and should be midway down the list of options.[1]
    • Be aware that not all Facebook users have access to the anonymous posting feature, and that it isn’t allowed in all groups. If you don’t see the option to post anonymously, it’s probably for one of those reasons.
  2. The groups you've joined will be on the left-hand side of the screen.[2]
    • You can only post anonymously in groups. You cannot post anonymously on Facebook in general.

Click Write something. This is the text field with your profile picture next to it near the top of the group page. Click on it to start composing a post.
  4. 4
Click the toggle next to “Post anonymously”. If you have the ability to post anonymously (and if it’s allowed in the group where you’re posting), you’ll see this option in the Create post window. Click the toggle to turn on anonymous posting.
    • A pop-up will appear, explaining how anonymous posts work. Click Got it to continue with your post.
    • You might also see an Anonymous Post button under the Write something field (along with options like “Poll” and “Feeling/activity”). Click this button, then select Create anonymous post. You can still toggle Post anonymously on or off in the text box before posting if you choose this option.
    • Anonymous posts won't include your name or profile photo, but group admins, group moderators, and Facebook can still see this info. Your post will appear with the name “Anonymous participant” (in public groups) or “Anonymous member” (in private groups).
  5. Like a normal post, you can include images, geotags, gifs, emojis, and more.
    • If you don't want to post anonymously after starting your message, click the Post anonymously toggle at the top of the post window to post normally.
  6. If the group requires post approval, your post will be sent to the admins and moderators for review. Otherwise, your post will be published right away.[3]
  7. 7
Comment or react anonymously on your anonymous post. Once you make an anonymous post, any comments or reactions you make on that post will be anonymous by default. To change who you’re commenting or reacting as, or customize your nickname while posting anonymously, you’ll need to use the mobile app.

    • Tap the three-line menu in the Facebook app. On Android, this is in the top-right corner. On an iPhone or iPad, this is in the bottom-right corner.[4]
    • Select Groups. If you don’t see this option in the menu, you might need to tap See more.
    • Be aware that not all Facebook users have access to the anonymous posting feature, and that it isn’t allowed in all groups. If you don’t see the option to post anonymously, it’s probably for one of those reasons.
  2. 3
Tap the group you want to post in. By default, your groups will be listed with those you visit most frequently at the top. Tap Sort to order them by name or most recently joined. You can also search for groups by name using the search bar at the top of the list.

    • Anonymous posts won't include your name or profile photo, but group admins, group moderators, and Facebook can still see this info. Other viewers or members of the group will see “Anonymous participant” (in public groups) or “Anonymous member” (in private groups).
  5. 6
Customize your nickname (optional). When you’re posting anonymously in the Facebook mobile app, you have the option to use a nickname. To do so, tap Customize a nickname, set a nickname for yourself, and tap Save.[5]
    • This option isn’t available for all users and all groups.
    • You won’t be able to use a nickname if another member of the group is already using that same nickname. You can only change your nickname once every two days.

      • Tap Edit nickname > Post anonymously without a nickname to go back to posting completely anonymously.
      • If you want to stop posting anonymously, toggle off Post anonymously and select OK, I understand.

Why can't you post anonymously?

  1. 1
Anonymous posting isn’t available for all users. According to Facebook’s support pages, not all accounts currently have access to this feature. Even if you’re unable to post anonymously right now, this capability might eventually be rolled out to all users.[7]
  2. Some group admins may have set their groups to not allow anonymous posting. If you don't see the Post anonymously toggle when you try to post in the group, anonymous posting is not allowed for that particular group.
    • It’s also possible that Facebook doesn’t offer that option for the group where you’re trying to post. Not all group admins have access to this feature.
  3. 3
Try these troubleshooting tips to post anonymously. While there’s no guaranteed way to get access to anonymous posting, users report that some of these tricks might work:
    • Try posting from a different device or browser. Even if you can’t access anonymous posting on one of your devices, it may work on another. If you typically use the mobile app, try switching to a browser instead.
    • Enable location services for Facebook. While this doesn’t work consistently for all users, some have found that anonymous posting becomes available when they allow the app to access their location.
      • On an iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Facebook and tap Location. Select While Using the App or Always.
      • On an Android, tap and hold the Facebook app icon on your screen, then tap App info > Permissions > Location. Select Allow all the time or Allow only while using the app.[8]
    • Try creating a new account (or logging into an alternative account you already have). Since Facebook is still rolling this feature out to all its users, there’s a chance you can gain access to it by using a different account.
