All About Personas

What are Personas?
“Personas” are a concept from the popular video game series Persona, which is a spinoff of the series Shin Megami Tensei. In the games, each character has a “persona” that manifests and represents their very soul. The personas themselves are based on things like historical figures, folk heroes, and other iconic characters you might recognize, but reimagined to better fit the game characters’ own personalities and perspectives.

Some popular personas:

Arsène is a fictional gentleman thief who targets society’s most dastardly figures and criminals who are worse and more ferocious than himself. In the games, he appears as a black-winged spirit in a red coat and a large hat.

Captain Kidd was a legendary pirate who sailed the high seas and was said to bury his treasure to hide it from his enemies. In the games, he appears as a caped skeleton astride a smiling pirate ship.

Carmen is a fictional character made famous by the opera of the same name. She’s a free-spirited seductress who is eventually slain by a scorned suitor. In the games, she appears as a coil-haired woman in an enormous ruffled dress, her heart-headed suitors scrambling after her.

Goemon was a historical Japanese outlaw said to be similar to Robin Hood, though little is known of his actual life. In the games, he appears as a flamboyant figure in billowing robes, toking a large pipe.

Zorro is a fictional masked outlaw famous for defending his fellow countrymen and the indigenous populations of Mexican California. In the games, he appears with his iconic mask, as well as a sharp rapier and a powerful chest.

Johanna was said to be a medieval female pope, though there’s little historical record of her existence. In the games, she appears as a futuristic motorcycle, probably to represent her trailblazing life.

Necronomicon is a fictional tome popularized by cosmic horror writer HP Lovecraft and said to contain the true nature of the cosmic deities. In the game, it appears as a high-tech flying saucer carved with glowing runes.

Robin Hood is a fictional outlaw famous for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. In the games, he appears as a bird-like superhero figure with flowing, tailed capes and a larger-than-life bow.

Cendrillon is the French incarnation of Cinderella, the fairy tale princess who overcame her life as a maid. In the games, she appears as a blue dancer with crystalline legs, a feathered cape, and a large boy atop her head.

Izanagi is a Japanese deity of creation said to have made the islands of Japan. In the games, he appears as a masked, black-coated figure who wields a formidable polearm.

Orpheus is a mythic Greek figure known for playing enchanting music. He ventured to the underworld to save his love, Eurydice, but was unsuccessful. In the games, he (or she) appears as a robotic version of the protagonist, wielding a large harp.

Sukuna-Hikona is a Japanese deity known for healing and creation. In the games, he appears as a masked canoeman, and also as a moth-winged young person in a blue mask with a sword of light.
