All About the Different Eyeliner Types

There are tons of different eyeliner styles out there, and different eyeliner types tend to suit specific eye shapes best. Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the most popular eyeliner styles and the shapes that they look best on:

  • Cat eyeliner: The cat eye look involves drawing a medium-thickness line across the upper lashline, gradually thickening the line more as it reaches the outer corner. The line is then extended slightly beyond the corner and flicked upward, creating a wing.
    • Looks best with: Downturned eyes, almond eyes, and monolid eyes
  • Subtle winged eyeliner: This look is similar to the cat eye, but the line across the lashline is slightly thinner, and the wing itself is also thinner and less dramatic.
    • Looks best with: Almond eyes, hooded eyes
  • Dramatic winged eyeliner: This look is also similar to the classic cat eye, but it’s more dramatic and eye-catching. The line along the upper lashline is drawn on thicker, and the wing at the outer corner is drawn at a sharper upward angle.
    • Looks best with: Monolid eyes, almond eyes, round eyes
  • Tightliner: This look involves applying pencil eyeliner to the upper (and possibly the lower) waterlines.
    • Looks best with: Hooded eyes, small eyes
  • Smudgy liner: Instead of sharp, cleanly drawn-on liner, this look is meant to be more relaxed and slightly messy. To achieve it, you line the upper and lower lashlines with pencil liner, then blend it out with a smudging brush or cotton swab to soften the line.
    • Looks best with: Round eyes, deep-set eyes
