Monitoring Spirit

A “monitoring spirit” is thought to be an evil spirit or demon that monitors a person’s life with the intention of doing them harm and undermining their faith. They’re said to be sent by evil entities as a form of spiritual warfare, and can take the form of animals such as insects, birds, lizards, snakes, and cats.

In neo-charismatic churches, believers think that monitoring spirits exemplify spiritual warfare, or an ongoing battle between good and evil.

   • What does the Bible say about monitoring spirits? The Bible does not directly mention “monitoring spirits” by name, but there are many scriptures that reference “evil powers” that attempt to harm the faithful.

How to Get Rid of Monitoring Spirits

   Pray. Prayer can help you get rid of demons and monitoring spirits. Holy Bible Expert Olivia Woodford suggests praying for protection and for the highest good to be done. You can even speak to a religious leader in your church and ask for their advice and for them to pray with you and help you get rid of any monitoring spirits.

   • Spiritual director Jennifer McVey, Cht, suggests praying to Archangel Michael. She explains, "Archangel Michael assists with positive energy and protection and clearing away negative energy…So, you can say, “Archangel Michael, please help me. Archangel Michael, assist me now. Archangel Michael, please be with me.”...And it's also helpful if you visualize that as you're calling upon Archangel Michael."

   Banish the spirit. James 4:7 states, “So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Ephesians 6:11 states, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” McVey says, “ask your higher self to take them to where they need to be or where they should be…just imagine the door open[ing]...and shoo them out of your house."

   Perform a fast to cleanse your energy. Spiritualist Elianne El-Amyouni says the best way to do “a spiritual cleanse is to fast. This is done in almost every tradition throughout history, every spiritual and religious tradition has some form of fasting ritual...How long and from what, and how is generally up to you. For me, for example…it's three days of a juice fast.”

   • Woodford adds, “What fasting does is…helps quiet all the noise…the sugar levels go down, blood alcohol levels go down. It's like you become clearer. And when you become clearer, then the…prayer is also clearer. And you're able to speak more from your heart when you're fasting. Often your feelings are more accessible, they're not numbed by the different foods or drinks or whatever you put into your system…There's a vulnerability, there's a sensitivity, there's a deep connection with your feelings that makes that prayer …richer.”
