How to Set Any Picture Your Computer's Wallpaper: Full Guide

You can use any image file as a background for your desktop or phone. On both mobile and desktop platforms, you will need to access the wallpaper interface through the settings, preview and adjust your wallpaper, and then confirm your selection. Wallpapers can also be set directly from the desktop or web browser on non-mobile devices. Here's how to make any picture your computer's wallpaper on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices.

Set Any Picture As Your Desktop Background

To set a picture as your computer's wallpaper, look for the picture you want to use. You can download an image from a website or transfer photos from another device. On Windows 11 or 10, right-click the desktop and select Personalize. Click Background > Picture > and then select the picture.

Right-click an empty space on the desktop. This will open a pop-up menu.
- Be sure to save the picture on your computer. Images used directly from websites are kept in temporary storage on your computer. If you change your wallpaper again after, you'll have to search the internet to change back to that image again unless you downloaded it separately.
- Keep in mind you must have a Windows license to change your desktop background.

Click Personalize. This should be the last option in the menu, and will open personalization settings in the settings app.

Select Picture in the drop-down menu. This lets you select a picture to display on your desktop. You can also choose to select a solid color or a slideshow.

Select a fit type. Select an option from the "Choose a fit for your desktop image" drop-down menu. You can select the following:

Right-click your desktop and select Personalize. This option is at the bottom of the context menu that appears and will take you to the “Personalization” menu. Some sample images will be displayed under the “Choose your picture” header.
- For simplified, on-the-fly wallpaper changes, simply right-click a photo on your computer and select “Set as desktop background” from the context menu. This lacks some of the customization options of the Personalization menu.
You will be prompted to browse the folder on your computer to select an image file.
The photo will be set as your wallpaper and appear in the “Choose your picture” image list.

The Gallery typically has an icon that resembles a stack of photos. You can usually find it on your Home screen.
Tap Album to browse photos by Album. Tap Pictures to browse pictures by date.
This displays a full-screen preview of the image.
