Find Language Tips for Picking an Interior Design Style
- Do some research. In the early stages of decorating your home, finding inspiration is key! Try creating a Pinterest board to collect your design ideas and inspo photos in one place. It may also help to search different design styles on Google, Instagram, or TikTok for more examples of what they look like.
- Think about how you want your home to feel. Do you want to feel relaxed and calm in your living space? If so, a low-key design style like Minimalism may be the right call. On the other hand, if you want to feel excited and energized in your home, a vibrant, colorful style like Bohemian or Mid-Century Modern may be more your speed. When you figure out the vibe you’re going for, it can really help you narrow down your choices!
- Consider everyone living in your home. If you live on your own, your design style can be totally up to you, but if you share your living space with friends or family, it’s important to choose an aesthetic that you can all agree on. Talk to the people you live with to figure out the places where your tastes overlap.[1]
- Make note of the design choices in other homes you like. When you visit the homes of friends or family members, jot down a few notes about anything that inspires you. If you find that you’re totally at home at one of their places, it may be a good sign that you share their design style!
- Focus on your favorite colors. If you absolutely love bright, warm colors like yellow and pink, a Coastal interior design style that focuses on blues and greens might not be for you. When in doubt, opt for an aesthetic that uses a lot of the colors you already love.[2]
