'Being chained up all the time or something' is a reference to a YouTube video by Slushy Noobz. Essentially, a kid says something all boys have to go through is 'being chained up all the time or something'. Since it's so random, ridiculous, and funny, it's become an inside joke for guys.

The phrase "Being chained up all the time or something" came from a Fortnite livestream and is a nonsensical phrase. YouTubers Slushy Noobz posted a video called "Fortnite Fashion Show?" on August 5, 2023, in which hosts Hamzah and Martin livestreamed a game of Fortnite with two child guests. The now-iconic phrase appears at the 26:50-minute mark, when one of the kids—Ray—tells Hamzah and Martin, "My first one is a thing that boys have to go through: being chained up all the time or something." The other kid then says, "What?" Hamzah says, "This is valid," but Martin also says, "...What??" Ray elaborates: "They can never be free."

It's not totally clear what Ray was talking about, and in the video, the conversation turned toward other topics, and the phrase was never explained. The video was viewed more than 350,000 times over two years, partly because the phrase itself is so perplexing, and partly because Martin's "What??" is so comedic and relatable (and has since been used as a soundbite itself).

The phrase has since taken on a life of its own as TikTokers began using the soundbite in videos. TikTokers commonly make videos of themselves lip-dubbing the lines or humorously acting out what it means to be "chained up all the time."
  • On March 3, 2024, TikTok creator @slushyloverz shared the Slushy Noobz video on TikTok with the caption, "Y'all remember this?" The post garnered more than 45,000 likes in a single year, and was reposted by other TikTokers as well.
  • On January 20, TikTok creator @mayaibukimabae posted an animated TikTok of characters from the manga and anime Hunter x Hunter acting out the clip. The post garnered more than 50,000 likes in six months.
  • On April 5, 2025, TikToker @zeneiacc posted a TikTok of herself lip dubbing the clip. Her post garnered over 83,000 likes in three months.
  • The clip was also referenced in TikToks such as @imcommingperiod's TikTok of himself dancing with the caption "being a boy," followed by footage of him acting as if his hands are bound behind his back and crying, overlaid with the caption "having to be chained up all the time or something."
