You really want to pay attention to skincare if you're trying to fill in a patchy beard. Healthy hair follicles grow out of healthy skin, so you have to moisturize, make sure that your skin is clean, and make sure that your beard hair is conditioned. For a lot of guys, it kind of looks unruly when you just wake up, but if you put a little bit of oil on your beard, it makes a big difference. You can shampoo, and it will look super dry, but if you put a little conditioner and a little oil on there, it'll look ten times better.
What I have seen that worked is to grow out your beard, and even if it's still kind of patchy, take the clippers and take it down to a shadow. For some reason, it actually gets fuller. Of course, this is on a case-by-case basis, but just from what I've seen it starts growing out more evenly.

I recommend visiting a barber and working on a shorter style beard, as patchy beards are usually patchy primarily on the sides. A barber can make a fade in the beard and blend the patches in to make them invisible.

If your beard grows in patchy, it may be due to your hormones. If you don't have enough nutrients or have low testosterone, then your facial hair might not grow in as full as you'd like it. Genetics may also be a cause of patchiness, so if other people in your family have patchy beards, you might also have one.
To help fix a patchy beard, try to incorporate nutrient-rich food into your diet. Eat foods like leafy greens, eggs, nuts, and oranges to get the vitamins and minerals you need to support healthy hair growth. You can also take a multivitamin to help get any nutrients you're missing.
Give your beard some extra time to grow to see if any of the patches fill in, and use your trimmers to even out your beard so it looks uniform. Make sure to wash and condition your beard to help it look fuller, and try applying a thickening cream to help hair grow in even more.
