Explain what a sorority is. What kind of stuff do you do?
My friends and I have been preparing for college a lot recently, and there's been a lot of talk about them joining one of the sororities on campus. They keep asking if I'm planning on joining too, but I honestly don't know what a sorority even does or why it's good. Is it really something that I should get involved in? What are the pros and cons I should know about? Brownie points if you have any firsthand experiences that you want to share while you were in a sorority.

Is joining a sorority worth it?
A sorority is basically a social and community group for women in college. Think of it as a mix of friendship, networking, and activities. Each sorority has its own âchapterâ and culture, but generally youâll find:
Sisterhood & Social Life: You make close friends, attend events, and often live together in a sorority house.
Philanthropy: Most sororities focus on charity work or community service projects.
Academics & Networking: They often have study groups, tutoring, and connections with alumni that can help after graduation.
Leadership: You can get experience running events or holding officer positions.
On the flip side, some cons are the time commitment (lots of events/meetings), financial costs (dues can be pricey), and that sometimes the âGreek lifeâ vibe isnât for everyone.
I wasnât in one personally, but a couple of my close friends were, and they really valued the sense of belonging and the opportunities they got through it. Itâs not a must-do in college, but if youâre looking for a built-in community, it can be a great option.

I've heard people have mixed experiences with sororities. They are sometimes described as "friends that you pay for" because it does provide a nice social community, but you have to pay to be a part of it. There's also a "rush" process you have to go through to get accepted into a sorority. It can feel a little clique-y because pretty and popular girls tend to get into certain sororities more than other girls, so if you do rush try not to feel bad if you don't get into your top choice. Some of my friends are really turned off by sororities for these reasons, and some of my friends find a great community! If you're interested, give it a shot but if it doesn't feel right it's okay to not be in one.

The cost of sororities was something I thought was going to be a barrier for me. But I learned that some sororities offer scholarships or payment plans, and different sororities have different dues. If cost is a barrier for you, hopefully knowing this can help you find a sorority that works for you!

Some scattered thoughts:
Pros:
- Community! Lots of social events and people to do things with
- Leadership and volunteer opportunities
- Some sororities have an academic focus or high minimum GPA, so it could give you study buddies and motivation to work hard
Cons:
- Cost can be high
- There can be drama
- Time commitment can be a lot
Research the sororities at your school beforehand, because each one is different. Talk to current members if you can!

Hi, current sorority member here! Happy to help :)
So basically, a sorority is like a big social club that you can join in college to meet people and network. They usually host big donation events to raise money for an important cause too. You do have to become a member and pay dues to stay in each semester, but those help fund all the awesome events we put on throughout the year.
To get in, you have to "rush" at the beginning of the year where you meet and chat with other members to see if you'd be a good fit for the sorority. If you're chosen, then you become a "pledge" and one of the members becomes your mentor. They'll teach you all about the different rules of the sorority, what the schedules are like, and how to get started with putting together events.
I'll say I love spending time with my sorority sisters. We have such a strong community together and it's nice to have that support in college. Having a sorority on your resume too is going to look great because it shows you're a hard worker. It's also really nice to know that even after I graduate, I can reach out to my sorority and continue networking with members all around the globe.
I will say, being in a sorority takes up a lot of your time on top of your classes. We're always having meetings and putting on events so we stay really busy throughout the semester. If you thought it was just hanging out with friends, then you'll be surprised how much work it actually takes. Dues can also be a little pricey, so definitely budget ahead for them.
I'd definitely take a peek at what sororities are at your college just to check them out. Choose whatever's the best fit for you though!
