Texting is fantastic for a lot of reasons but it can also present some unique challenges. For instance, how can you detect chemistry when you can't read a person's body language? Fortunately, if someone's attracted to you, you can usually tell based on the types of texts they send, as they are usually flirtatious, inquisitive, and complimentary. Keep reading to figure out if someone's crushing on you, including expert advice from dating coaches Imad Jbara and Mark Rosenfeld on what to look for.

How to Tell If Someone Likes You Through Text

If someone likes you, they'll text you frequently, often beginning with a "good morning" text and ending with a "good night" text. They'll send you flirtatious messages and try to make you laugh. They're likely to compliment you, open up, and tell you they miss you. If they ask you out, you'll know for sure.

They send “good morning” & “goodnight” texts.

  1. Receiving a “good morning” text from a crush is one of the best feelings ever, as it’s a good sign that you’re the first person they want to talk to when their eyes flutter open. Aw. If their morning greetings are coupled with evening goodbyes, then that means you’re the last person they want to talk to before they drift off into dreamland. So, you must be important to them to some extent! Lucky you.[1]

Their texts are playful.

  1. Most people won't obviously come out and text something like, "I like you. Do you want to go out?" You'll have to read between the lines and pay attention to the mood of their texts. Maybe they gently tease or joke with you, for instance.
    • If they sound businesslike and professional, they're probably not trying to flirt with you.
    • They might text, "I'd love to visit Europe one day. Till then, I'll settle for Italian food. You don't know any good spots, do you?"
    • Jbara says one way to flirt via text is to give boring answers a fun and quirky makeover. If someone asks you, “How was your day?” He advises against giving one word answers like, “fine” or “good.”[2]
      • “Instead of saying something like that, I'll usually say something like, ‘Oh, you know, the usual, just saved a group of kids from a fire and helped an old lady across the street. How about you?’”[3]

They text you frequently.

  1. Scroll through your messages to see what times they texted you. If you see that they sent you a message in the morning, a few in the afternoon, some after dinner, and one before you went to bed, it might mean you're on their mind a lot!
    • These don't have to be super flirty texts or serious conversations. Even just a quick text to check in shows that they care about what you're up to or how you're doing.
    • The texts might also show that they're paying attention to you. For instance, you might get a message like, "You slayed it at the game tonight. Maybe you could teach me a few tips?"
    • They may be into you if you can tell you're always on their mind. They might text you during the day to ask how a meeting or test went, for instance.

They reply quickly.

PDF download Download Article
  1. Did you just get a notification even though you just texted them? If this keeps happening, they're probably waiting by their phone and focusing on your conversation.[4] This is a great sign that they want to talk with you.
    • Dating coach Mark Rosenfeld says that it doesn't matter what you're texting about—the point is they want to keep the conversation going, which is why they're texting back so quickly.[5]
    • A lot of times, these quick replies can be part of a debate or conversation about things you like. They might text, "Favorite band?" Once you reply, they may quickly ask, "Pineapple on pizza. Yes or no?" And so on.
    • It could just mean they're fast at replying in general.
    • Reader Poll: We asked 240 wikiHow readers how they would respond if a girl texts them back quickly, and 51% of them said they would also reply back fast to show her they like her. [Take Poll] If you like the person back, try to match their energy and reply quickly to show you’re interested.

They apologize when they’re busy.

  1. If you and your crush are texting regularly throughout the day, and then there’s a sudden lull in their response, this can sometimes feel like they’re ignoring you. However, if your crush eventually texts back with an apology or an explanation for their lack of reply, this means they’re really considering your feelings. It’s likely that work or another obligation came up, and they’re not afraid to tell you about it. They don’t want you to think they’ve forgotten about you— and how could they? You’re awesome.

They invite you places.

  1. They might ask you directly to hang out or they may just suggest that you show up to something they're going to. Either way, it means they want to be around you.[7]
    • For instance, they may text, "I'm at the party. Why aren't you here?!" or, "Hey, I'm meeting up with some friends tonight at the coffee shop. Want to join?"
    • This might be tied to checking in on you. You might get a text like, "Missed you at work today! You alright? Want to meet up later?"

They pay you compliments.

  1. They may text to say how great you looked today or to compliment you on something you did. For instance, you might get, "That color green looks amazing on you," or, "Ugh, I'm trying to work, but I can't stop thinking about how you killed it during the game."[8]
    • Appreciate a direct compliment for what it is. The person is literally saying that they like you!
    • They might be specific, too. For instance, you may get a text like, "I was super impressed by your answer in English class today. I never thought about the book that way."
    • Jbara encourages you to pay them thoughtful compliments about who they are, not just about their appearance.[9]

They remember past conversations.

PDF download Download Article
  1. This indicates that your crush is not only a great listener, but that they actually care about what you have to say. For example, if you mention having a fear of dogs, your crush may store that in their memory bank so that they can warn or protect you in the event of an unwanted canine interaction. If you text them your favorite candy and they bring you some the next time you get together, they want to please and impress you. In many ways, memory is a form of flattery!

11

They share their recommendations.

PDF download Download Article
  1. This shows that they value your opinions. For instance, they might text, "Need some new bands. Thoughts?" or "I loved the last show you recommended. Got any more?" They may even ask for your input on deeper topics like how to handle family drama or what you think about a current event.[13]
    • Sure, lots of people may ask for your opinion, but remember, if they like you, they're probably doing a lot of these things or frequently asking for your advice. They may simply be looking for a reason to talk to you.
    • They may give you recommendations, too! For example, they could text, "You've got to read Smith's new book. I know you would love it."

They keep the conversation going.

PDF download Download Article
  1. Maybe the last thing you said to your crush was a statement agreeing with one of their opinions and you can’t figure out exactly how to pivot on to the next subject, so you take a pause. If your crush is proactive about continuing to talk to you, he might say something like, “So, what are you having for lunch today?” Or, “Seen any good shows lately?” They enjoy talking to you so they’ll find any excuse to keep those lines of communication open.
    • Jbara notes that this kind of attentiveness is definitely a sign that they’re into you, although he warns not to enter needy territory.[14]
      • He says, “[People] can tell if you're needy or not, just by the way you text them, how fast you text them, and by the amount of energy you put in.[15]
    • Jbara believes that a healthy amount of energy and interest should be expressed by both sides. If not, it might not be a good match.[16]
15

They treat you differently.

PDF download Download Article
  1. You may still be confused even after reading between the lines, and that's okay! If you have friends in common who can keep a secret, ask to read the person's texts to them. This gives you an idea of how they communicate. Are they flirty with others? Do they use lots of emojis? How often do they text?[18]
    • For example, you might learn that the person doesn't actually text others very often and, when they do, it's fairly straightforward. This may mean that, if they're texting you a lot throughout the day and being really expressive, they're probably into you.
    • Pay attention to when they're texting other people. If they're texting you late night because they can't sleep, it's probably because they want to build a connection with you.

They open up.

PDF download Download Article
  1. Opening up doesn’t come easily for many people. Often, they fear judgement or ridicule, opting to keep their innermost thoughts, ideas, and feelings to themselves. But if your crush begins spilling their guts via text— even if it’s one little tidbit at a time—, that means they trust you. Maybe they’ve started sharing how difficult their relationship with their father is, or that they need a tutor for math, or that they’re afraid of heights. Whatever it is, try to embrace them and thank them for their vulnerability.
17

They initiate deep conversations.

PDF download Download Article
  1. Although texting is not the best medium to have a deep or serious conversation, someone who likes you probably wants to get to know you better and won’t let a screen get in the way of that. They might ask you things like, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10?” Or, “What impact would you like to leave on the world?” It could also be as simple as, “What was the last movie that made you cry and why?”

They want to hang out.

PDF download Download Article
  1. This is one of the best ways to figure out if they like you. If they're interested in you, they'll most likely say yes! If they're not into you, they may ignore the message or give you an excuse. Either way, you'll have a much better idea of how they feel about you.[19]
    • Try sending a text like, "Hey let's grab a drink this Thursday. 8pm?" Keep in mind that if they like you but they can't meet up at that time, they might just suggest a time that works for them. If they don't suggest another time, you can totally wait a few days and try again.

    Expert Answer
It's really more about the energy you're putting out than the specific words that you're sharing. Aim to reply quickly, be enthusiastic, and let the conversation develop organically. If there's any mutual interest there, you should feel it and they will too.

She probably cares about your views and posts more when she sees you've looked because she wants you to be more interested in her. When she stops posting when you stop looking, she's likely waiting for you to be online again so she can post more and ensure you see it.
