Telling Better Dirty Jokes
Everyone loves a dirty joke now and then. Even when we look at a dirty joke teller disapprovingly, there’s a good chance we’re cracking up on the inside. That said, a dirty sense of humor is an art, and it’s not something you can just throw around carelessly. Here’s how to curate your dirty sense of humor without pushing it too far:
Know your audience. A dirty joke only works around people who are down with that sort of thing. Otherwise, you’ll just get blank stares, and things could get awkward. Only crack your dirty joke around people you know, and people you know will appreciate it. Otherwise, put it in your pocket and save it for later.
Right place, right time. You probably shouldn’t use that filthy punchline at a funeral, or a daycare, or a job interview. As with any sort of humor, the context matters. A bar, or a kickback with a bunch of relaxed, good-humored people? Go for it. Your girlfriend’s mom’s house during a family reunion? Not so much.
Mix it up. If you only ever tell dirty jokes, your humor becomes predictable, and people might get tired of it, no matter how shocking the joke is. The best way to get more laughs is to diversify! Tell some totally clean and innocent jokes now and then. That way, the next time you so get dirty, people will be more genuinely surprised and taken off-guard, making the joke funnier.
Be dirty, not offensive. Dirty jokes are a time-honored tradition that have been around since as long as people could tell jokes. There’s a difference between a dirty joke and a plain old offensive or hurtful joke, though. When in doubt, ask yourself: Is it mean? Is it meant to deliberately hurt someone? Does the joke have a “victim” instead of a punchline?
