Some people say that sperm can go through clothing while others argue that this isn’t possible—so what’s the truth? The answer depends on how many layers you’re wearing and what you’re doing, but the general answer is that it’s not likely that sperm can go through fabric easily. Whether you’re worried about becoming pregnant unintentionally or getting an STI, we’ve got you covered. We’ll also answer other common sexual health questions and how to practice safe sex.
Impregnation Through Clothing
It’s unlikely that sperm can go through one or more layers of clothing unless the fabric is soaked in semen.[1] Sperm on skin or fabric can only survive for up to a few minutes. However, if a penis penetrates the vagina or semen comes in contact with the outside of the vagina (vulva), pregnancy is possible.
