You can add page numbers on all pages or specific pages. Here's how to add page numbers or page X or Y page numbers in Word using your Windows or Mac computer.
Inserting Page Numbers in Microsoft Word
To add page numbers in Microsoft Word, click the Insert tab and select the Page Number drop-down menu. Scroll down to the X of Y section, and then select an option. The page number will be added automatically. Double-click the page number to edit the formatting or text.

Open a document in Word. Microsoft Word is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can also use Word online at https://www.office.com/.

Click Insert. This is the tab at the top, between Home and Draw.Advertisement

Click Page Number. You can find this in the Header & Footer section. A drop-down menu will open.[1]

Select where you want the page numbers. You can select: Top of page, Bottom of page, Page Margins, or Current Position (where the cursor is).
- When you select a position, more options will appear.

Scroll down to the "Page X of Y" section. If you want basic numbering, you can browse through any of the sections.

Select an option. This will add the page number formatting to your document.
- If you want your first page to be different from the following (such as a title page), check the box for Different First Page in the Options section of the Header & Footer tab.
- Be sure to save your document.

Double-click the page number section. Depending on your selections in the previous section, this could be at the header, footer, or margins of your document.
- The Header & Footer editing tab should open.

Click Page Number. This is in the Header & Footer section. A drop-down menu will open.

Click Format Page Numbers. You can find this towards the bottom of the drop-down menu. A new window will open.

Customize the formatting. You can change the number format and page numbering format.
- Click the Number format drop-down menu to change the style of the numbers (ex: A, B, C… or i, ii, iii…).
- Check the box for Include chapter number if you have chapter formatting in your document. You can change the heading style and separator.
- To change where your page numbers start, click the circle next to Start at and enter the page number.

Click OK. This will apply your formatting changes.

Double-click the page number section. Depending on your selections in the previous section, this could be at the header, footer, or margins of your document.
- The Header & Footer editing tab should open.
- Use this method to add any additional text to your page number formatting, such as author name.

Click where you want the added text. If you want the added text to be at the front of the page numbering, click the beginning of the text. If you want it at the end, click the end of the text. Add a space if necessary.

Enter your additional text. The added text will be applied to all pages with the page number formatting.
- You can edit the page number text similar to other text in your document, such as changing text size, font, and more. Just select it, and then add your edits.
- When you're finished, double-click anywhere on the document, or click Close Header and Footer in the top toolbar.
