This wikiHow guide teaches you how to type in Hindi on WhatsApp on your phone or tablet. To write Hindi characters, you'll need to install the Hindi language keyboard in your phone's Settings app, then switch to the Hindi keyboard and start typing.
Typing in Hindi on WhatsApp Made Simple
- On iOS, go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Hindi (Devanagari).
- On Android, go to Settings → System → Languages & input → Samsung Keyboard → Languages and types → Manage input language → Hindi.
- Once installed, tap the chat field in WhatsApp and select the Devanagari keyboard.
Steps
Adding a Hindi Keyboard to Your iPhone/iPad
-
Open your iPhone's Settings app and tap General. The Settings app has a grey icon with gears on it. You'll likely find it on your iPhone’s (or iPad’s) Home Screen. Inside the app, scroll down a bit; the General option is near the top of the Settings page.[1]
-
Tap the Keyboard option. You may have to scroll down a bit. The Keyboard option is right underneath Date & Time in the General tab.[2]Advertisement
-
Tap Keyboards → Add New Keyboard. You'll see Keyboards near the top of the page. Then, once you tap it, a new page will open with a list of the currently active keyboards on your iOS device and the Add New Keyboard option at the bottom of the list.[3]
-
Scroll down and tap Hindi. Since your iPhone's languages are arranged alphabetically, just scroll, and you’ll find Hindi with the rest of the languages starting with "H.” If Hindi appears near the top of the "SUGGESTED KEYBOARDS" list near the top of this page, you may not need to scroll down to see it.[4]
-
Tap Devanagari. This option places traditional Hindi symbols on your keyboard rather than transcribing them as you type. However, if you’d rather use the Transliteration option, you can select that instead (or select both and switch between them).
-
Tap Done. You may now choose a Hindi keyboard from within your iPhone's or iPad’s standard keyboard.[5]
Adding a Hindi Keyboard to Your Android
-
Open your Android's Settings app. This gear-shaped app icon is likely in your Android's App Drawer.
-
Tap System, Additional Settings, or General management. If you’re using a Samsung device, look for General management; otherwise, look for the System or Additional Settings option.[6]
-
Select Language & input. Again, this is slightly different if you’re using a Samsung device; in that case, look for Languages & input.[7]
-
Tap Virtual keyboard, Current keyboard, or On-screen keyboards. On Samsung devices, look for On-screen keyboards. Otherwise, select the Virtual keyboard option in your Settings app.
-
Select the keyboard you want to add a language to. The exact name of your Android keyboard may vary depending on the phone brand. On a Samsung device, for example, you’d select Samsung Keyboard. Regardless, this should be your phone’s default keyboard—so tap on whatever keyboard is marked as default.[8]
- On non-Samsung Android models, the default keyboard is Gboard (Google keyboard).
- On some versions of Android, this option may be labeled Current Keyboard.
-
Find the keyboard’s language settings. This will also change based on the Android brand you’re using. On Samsung devices, tap Languages and types → Manage input languages. On other Androids, look for a Change input language or even a simple Language option.[9]
- If you’re using an older version of Android, you can instead find the section labeled Keyboard & input methods on the Language & input page.
-
Enable or download the Hindi keyboard on your Android. Opening your Android keyboard’s language settings will reveal a list of languages. Scroll until you find Hindi and enable it by tapping the switch next to the Hindi heading or the download symbol (for Samsung phones).[10]
- On Samsung keyboards, look for the download button to the right of the हिंदी heading.
- You may have to first toggle the Use system language option to the off position.
Using a Hindi Keyboard in WhatsApp
-
Open WhatsApp and tap Chats. It's at either the bottom of the screen (iPhone) or the top of the screen (Android).
- If WhatsApp opens to a conversation, tap the "Back" button in the top-left corner of the screen to view the "Chats" page.
-
Tap a conversation. Doing so will open the conversation.
-
Tap the chat field. It's at the bottom of the page.
-
Select the Devanagari keyboard. Depending on your phone, this process will vary:[11]
- iPhone - Press and hold the globe icon in the bottom-left corner of the keyboard, then swipe your finger up to select the Devanagari keyboard.
- Android - Press and hold the space bar or the "Language" button on the left side of the keyboard, then tap the "Hindi" option.
-
Type your message as usual. Your keyboard and the characters on-screen will display in Hindi.
- When you're done typing your message, tap the "Send" arrow to the right of the chat field to send the message.
