Wicked: A Brief History
You likely know Wicked as the beloved stage or movie musical, but did you know it all started with a book? Written by Gregory Maguire, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West was published in 1995 and marketed as an unofficial prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story follows the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and the Good Witch (Galinda) before Dorothy arrives in Oz.
Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz fell in love with Maguire’s story and saw its potential to become something big. So, he got to writing! In 1998, Schwartz obtained the rights to the story for the stage and began the long process of creating one of the most well-known musicals to date.
Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz premiered on Broadway on October 30, 2003, starring Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. The following year, the show went on to win 3 Tony Awards: Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel), Best Scenic Design (Eugene Lee), and Best Costume Design (Susan Hilferty).
Flash forward 21 years, and Wicked is still playing on Broadway, but now the love for the story is elevated because of the 2024 film adaptation Wicked: Part I, featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The film was a massive success, grossing over $750 million at the box office worldwide. The film franchise divided the story in half, concluding the first film where Act 1 of the stage production ends. Wicked: For Good, the final installment, will release in November 2025 and is expected to break more records than its predecessor.
