…Christoper Lee, who played Saruman, was OBSESSED with LOTR before landing the role?
Christopher Lee was the ultimate LOTR fanboy. He would have aced our LOTR trivia quiz with flying colors. He was so in love with the series, he reportedly read the books every year for forty years before being cast in Peter Jackson's adaptation. And on the night he died in 2015, he spent his last hours watching The Lord of the Rings with hospital staff. We miss him so much.
…the Beatles once tried to make a Lord of the Rings movie?
They hoped to get Stanley Kubrick to direct it, but they couldn't get the rights from Tolkien, who was hesitant to see pop stars adapt his books. But can you imagine?? Paul McCartney was going to be Frodo, John Lennon was going to be Gollum (!!!!), George Harrison was going to be Gandalf (ofc), and Ringo Starr was going to be Sam. We're obsessed with this and would give anything to see this adaptation realized.
…Gandalf, Sauron, and the Balrog are all part of the same race?
Can you even imagine three characters less likely to be related? In fact, all three descend from the Maiar, a race of angel-like beings who can transform into different shapes. The Maiar were originally created to serve the Valar, godlike beings, but when the Valar broke up into good and evil factions, so did the Maiar. Gandalf ended up on the side of good, while the Balrog and Sauron ended up baddies.
…J. R. R. Tolkien didn't choose the title The Return of the King?
He apparently wanted the final book in the trilogy to be called The War of the Ring and felt The Return of the King revealed too much about the plot, but his publisher felt differently, and ultimately prevailed.
…in early drafts of the books, Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck was called "Marmaduke"?
And Frodo was called "Bingo," and Strider was called "Trotter," and Gandalf was called "Thorin." Can you imagine?
