Trying to figure out what the lock sound setting means on your iPhone? It's a clicking sound that plays when you press the lock button on your device. You'll only hear the sound if the setting is turned on and your iPhone isn't on mute or silent. This wikiHow guide will go over what the lock sound on an iPhone is and how to turn it on or off.

Things You Should Know

  • The lock sound is a short clicking audio that plays when you lock your iPhone.
  • Open the Settings app and go to Sounds & Haptics to turn on or off the lock sound.
  • Note that the lock sound only plays when your iPhone isn't on Silent Mode.

  1. It's a gray gear icon on one of your iPhone home page screens.[1]
  2. This will open the Sounds & Haptics page in Settings.[2]
  3. This will turn the lock sound on or off. The lock sound is on when the toggle is green and positioned to the right.[3]
  4. If the lock sound is turned on but not playing when you lock your device, there are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:
    • Make sure your iPhone is in Ring Mode. Move the Ring/Silent switch on the side of your iPhone to the Ring position, so that there is not a red background behind it.
    • Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn up the "Ringtone and Alert Volume." It's a slider near the top of the page.
    • Toggle off "Change with Buttons" on the Sounds & Haptics page so that pressing the volume buttons doesn't change the ringtone volume. Now they'll only change the volume of app audio playing on your iPhone.
