Meet the Epic: The Musical Characters
Epic: The Musical is a series of 9 concept albums that, when put together, offer a musical retelling of the Odyssey, the epic poem by Homer about the warrior Odysseus, as he travels the world on his monumental journey back home. Since it’s based on myth, it features a host of familiar characters, as well as some less familiar faces:
Odysseus is the main protagonist, and the hero of the Trojan War, after which he sets off on his long journey home. He’s capable, determined, and fierce, but sometimes his passionate need to be reunited with his wife, Penelope, clouds his judgement.
Penelope is Odysseus’ beloved wife, who stays loyal and devoted even when it appears her husband will never return.
Telemachus is Odysseus’ only son, separated from his father as a boy but eager to be reunited and show his father all he’s learned.
Zeus is one of the primary gods in Greek mythology, and a major background player in the Odyssey, in which he acts as a fearsome force who often leads Odysseus astray.
Eurylochus is Odysseus’ second-in-command. Though he’s loyal and does his best to advise Odysseus, his loyalty sometimes gets the better of him, and he ends up hurting more than he helps.
Polites is one of Odysseus’ closest friends, and encourages him to put down his sword and embrace a more peaceful way of life.
Athena, goddess of war and wisdom, is the patron of Odysseus. Along his travels, she advises and mentors him. Though she always wants the best for him, she sometimes misjudges what that means.
Antinous is one of Penelope’s suitors, who plots to usurp Odysseus in his absence.
Polyphemus is the cyclops son of Poseidon, who kills many of Odysseus’ men, but is killed in return.
Poseidon, god of the sea, has a bone to pick with Odysseus, who’s killed many of Poseidon’s children along his journey.
Aeolus, god of the wind, gifts Odysseus with a bag of wind to aid him on his journey and to bring him home.
Circe is an enchantress who traps Odysseus and his men on her island.
Tiresias is an oracle who warns Odysseus that he won’t return home unscathed.
Calypso is an obsessive goddess who holds Odysseus captive and tries to make him fall in love with her.
Scylla is a six-headed monster and one of Poseidon’s children. She dispatches 6 of Odysseus' men.
