A Tour Through the Decades

The more things change, the more things stay the same. Or so they say. The truth is, things have changed a whole lot throughout the years, and they’ll keep on changing. In the meantime, we can look back on history and learn a few things about where we’ve been, and maybe we’ll see a little of where we’re going, in the process.

1900-1960
The early twentieth century was a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Civil rights movements worked hard, the world weathered two global wars, and the United States suffered one of its worst-ever economic depressions. We often think of this time in black and white, but it was also a colorful period full of progress, discovery, rebuilding, and learning.

1960s
This was the age of Civil Rights, with figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X making waves, LGBTQ+ communities made their voices heard, and anti-war protestors opposed the Vietnam War while rock ‘n’ rollers shredded across festival stages.

1970s
The 1970s was a time of rapid change that took the world by storm. Money was on the rise, and so was Disco. Women made their voices heard, and the ancestors of the modern computer were born into the world, setting the stage for the decades to come.

1980s
The ‘80s is a story with two sides. On the one hand, world powers vied for economic domination, while the Cold War thawed and dissipated. The AIDS crisis was in full swing, and nationalism was on the rise. On the other hand, leaps and bounds were made in the tech world, and the dawn of the internet was upon us.

1990s
The ‘90s were like the blueprint for our world today. The internet made its way into everyday homes, and though it was slow, it connected the world. New tech like camcorders and cell phones revolutionized the way we communicate, but they still had a long way to go, and people worried about Y2K, the shift into the new millennium that nearly threw the tech world into chaos.

2000s
If the ‘90s were the blueprint, the 2000s were the younger siblings. Pop culture boomed alongside faster internet speeds, and all at once it was like the whole world started talking. The problems we still see today came into focus, like wealth inequality and climate change, but that didn’t stop people from posting places like Twitter and MySpace.
