Tips for Picking a Color for Your Braces

Think about the colors you wear the most. Your closet is a good place to look for inspiration. If you tend to gravitate toward a certain color palette with your clothes, chances are you’ll like that color for your braces, too!

Assess your hair color and skin undertones. Certain colors tend to go especially well with specific features. For example, blue and purple braces tend to look amazing with cool undertones, while warmer tones like orange and red often suit warmer undertones. Deep, jewel-toned braces also look great with darker hair, while lighter, pastel colors blend well with lighter hair.

Decide how eye-catching you want them to be. Bolder, brighter colors will show off your personality and style, but they’ll also draw more attention to your braces. Softer, more subdued colors help your braces blend with your features and make them less noticeable.

Think about the color of your teeth. If you have super bright, white teeth, pretty much any color of braces will likely suit you. On the other hand, if you have some yellowing, you might want to go with a deeper color (royal blue, purple, etc). These dark colors create contrast, which makes your teeth look whiter.

Research the symbolism of colors. If you’re having a hard time deciding, it could be a good idea to pick a color that represents something meaningful. For example, red symbolizes passion and energy, purple symbolizes creativity and spirituality, and blue symbolizes peace and calm.

Have fun, and don’t stress! Luckily, your braces color isn’t a permanent decision. Your orthodontist will likely have you come in for an appointment every 4-8 weeks, so you’ll have an opportunity to change the color of your braces pretty frequently if you end up wanting a different color.[1]
