How to use the emoji slider, as a creator or a viewer
PDF download Download Article

The emoji slider is an interactive feature in Instagram stories. Like a poll, it is a sticker that you place on your story to allow your friends to answer any question you ask. Whenever your friends view your story, they'll be able to let you know exactly how they feel about your question. In this article, we'll go over how to put the emoji slider sticker on your Stories and Reels, as well as how to use the emoji slider if you're a viewer.

Using the Instagram Emoji Slider Sticker

If you're a creator, after choosing the photo/video for your Story or Reel, tap the sticker button, then select the emoji slider. If you're a viewer, simply drag the emoji along the slider to answer the question, then remove your finger to lock in your vote.

  1. Open the Instagram app and tap the plus + icon, then select Story from the menu. You can't add the emoji slider to a normal post. You can only add it to a Story or a Reel.
    • This method will work to add an emoji slider to your Instagram stories on Android, iPhone, and iPad.
  2. Use the capture button (the big white circle) at the bottom of the screen to capture the photo or video for your Story.[1]
    • If you don't want to include a photo or video in your Story, tap the Aa button on the left-hand side of the screen. Once you tap on it, it will say Create.

  3. The sticker button looks like a smiley face in a square, with the bottom-right corner folded over. For Stories, this button is at the top of the screen.
  4. This will add the emoji slider to your screen so you can edit it.
  5. Type in the question that you want your friends or fans to answer. Note that your question can only be up to three lines long, however.
  6. Tap on the emoji above the keyboard to change the emoji on the slider. Instagram will show you 15 default emojis (from a smiley face to an angry face to a heart and even the poop emoji), but you can tap the + button at the end of the list to choose any emoji for the slider.
  7. Tap on the circular rainbow icon at the top of the screen to change the color of the slider sticker. By default, the slider will be white with a red slider and black text. The other color options have white text and a white slider, but the background changes to black, red, pink, purple, orange, green, blue, or aqua.
  8. You can change the size, angle, and position of your question by pinching and dragging the slider to fit the content of your picture better.
    • If you drag and drop the slider over the trash can, it’ll be deleted. You can start fresh with a new one if you delete it by mistake.
  9. Just hit the Your Story button in the bottom left to upload it for your followers to view and answer your question.
    • To see how your voters voted, swipe up on the Story.[2]

Using the Emoji Slider to Vote

PDF download Download Article
  1. If one of your favorite creators posted a Story or Reel with the emoji slider, pull it up on Instagram now.
  2. For example, if the question is "Are you excited for our new launch?" or "How much do you love cupcakes?", the slider can then be used to gauge how much excitement or love you have. If you are super excited for the creator's new launch, you'd want to drag the slider quite far to the right—maybe even all the way. On the flip side, if you don't like cupcakes, you'd leave the slider more to the left.
    • One way to think about it is to envision the slider as a percentage, with all the way to the left being 0% agreement with the question and all the way to the right being 100% agreement with the question.
  3. After you vote, a hollow white dot will appear that shows you the average answers of the poll so far, and your avatar will appear to show you where your vote was. Once you vote, you can't change it, so vote wisely!
    • The creator will also be able to see how you voted by looking at their Story or Reel insights.
