The TI-83/TI-84 calculator is an essential tool for any student in a math or science course. Solving for unknown variables is a common problem that students may run across while taking these courses. This manual tells you how to utilize your calculator to solve for unknown variables. If you are at least at an intermediate level in algebra, can understand the math behind this calculation, and are somewhat familiar with the TI-83/TI-84 calculators, get started at step 1, below.

    • Sample equation: 7x^4 + 2x^3 – 5x + 2 = 43 + 3x.

  2. You are now ready to solve for x using solver.
  3. Warning: read proceeding sections in this step before attempting.
    • To type in X use the “X,T,Ø,n” button.
    • To type in powers of numbers use the “^” button followed by the number of the power.
    • Complete the rest of this equation and press “Enter”.
  4. The number for “X=” should change to the answer of the unknown variable.
