Siri, Apple's personal digital assistant, can control most of the functionality of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac with voice commands. You can use Siri to look stuff up online, send and receive messages, plan your route, and much more. To use Siri, you just need to activate it with your voice, a button on your device, or even your Apple Watch or AirPods. Read on to learn how to activate Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and how to enable or disable Siri's features as needed.

Easy Ways to Turn On Siri

  • On an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, just say "Hey Siri," then speak your request.
  • You can also press and hold the side button, home button, or top button on your iPhone or iPad, then ask your question.
  • If Siri doesn't turn on, you may need to enable it in Settings > Siri > Talk to Siri.

How to Turn On Siri

  1. Siri is enabled by default on all modern Apple devices, so you can usually turn on Siri by pressing and holding the designated Siri button on your device (usually the side, top, or home button). This button's location varies by Apple device:
    • On an iPhone, press and hold the side button (if your device has Face ID), or the Home button (for iPhones with Touch ID), then ask Siri a question.
    • On an iPad, press and hold the top button. If your iPad has a Home button, press and hold that instead. When you release the button, you can ask Siri anything.
    • On a Mac, click the Siri button on the menu bar or dock, or tap the Siri button on your MacBook's Touch Bar. If you have an Apple keyboard with function keys (e.g., F1, F2), you can press and hold the Dictation key (the microphone), release it, and make your request.[1]
      • If Siri is not in the menu bar, you can add it at Apple menu > System Settings > Control Center.[2]
      • You can adjust your Siri preferences in Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri).
    • If Siri doesn't start, it may be disabled. Jump down to How to Set Up Siri to learn how to turn it on.
  2. Siri's voice feature is also enabled by default, so you should be able to activate Siri by voice as long as your screen is unlocked and you haven't disabled Siri. Just say, "Hey Siri," followed by your request, and Siri will supply an answer.
    • For example, to have Siri check your text messages, say, "Hey Siri, do I have any new messages?"

  3. If you have an Apple device that supports Apple Intelligence (iOS 18 and later), like any iPhone 16 model, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max, you can skip using your voice and instead type it out chat-style. Just double-tap the bottom of the screen to activate the Siri typing field, then type your request.[3]
    • You can toggle Type to Siri on and off in Settings > Accessibility > Siri.[4]
  4. If you're using AirPods, you can ask Siri a question without unlocking your iPhone or iPad's screen:
    • On AirPods Max, press and hold the Digital Crown, then speak your request.
    • On AirPods Pro or AirPods 3rd gen and later, press and hold the force sensor, then speak.
    • On 1st or 2nd generation AirPods, double-tap the outside of either AirPod, wait for the chime, then make a request.
    • If you have a compatible Bluetooth headset or other compatible headphones, you may be able to activate Siri by pressing and holding the Call button until you hear a short notification chime, then release and speak your command.
  5. If you have a HomePod, touch and hold the top, then ask Siri for something. If your request is on the longer side, keep pressing and holding the top of the HomePod as you speak, and then release it when you're finished.
  6. If your vehicle supports CarPlay, press and hold the Voice button on your steering wheel as you speak your request. When you're finished, lift your finger from the Voice button, and Siri will respond. You can also press and hold the digital Home button on your CarPlay display.
  7. On any Apple Watch, you can look at the watch face or tap the screen, then say "Hey Siri," or press and hold the Digital Crown and then ask for what you need.
    • On Apple Watch Series 3 or later, you can also raise your wrist to bring your Apple Watch close to your mouth. As soon as you raise your watch, you can start speaking the command or question.
  8. As you're holding down the button (which is on the right side of your remote), ask Siri anything, then release the button.
    • You can only use Siri on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, and Siri is not available in all regions.[5]

  1. If Siri doesn't activate on your iPhone or iPad when you use your voice or the appropriate button, it's likely disabled in your settings, or your preferences are set incorrectly.
    • If you're using a Mac, you can turn Siri on and off in Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri).
  2. You'll see one of these two options in the second group of settings.
  3. This is where you can turn Siri features on or off.
  4. By default, you can activate Siri by saying "Siri" or "Hey Siri." If "Off" is selected, Siri will never respond to your voice. Use the options here to enable or disable Siri voice activation.
  5. By default, you can use your iPhone or iPad's side, top, or home button to activate Siri. If pressing and holding the button on your device did not activate Siri, toggle on the switch for "Press Home for Siri" or "Press side button for Siri." Alternatively, if you don't want the button to activate Siri, turn the toggle switch off.
    • Tap the back button to return to the Siri menu when you're finished.
  6. By default, Siri will use spoken responses unless your iPhone or iPad is on silent (Automatic). If you'd rather Siri never respond aloud, you can select Prefer Silent Responses. If you want Siri to speak aloud, enable Prefer Spoken Responses.
    • You can also enable Siri captions and a transcription of your question here.
    • Tap the back button to return to your Siri settings.
  7. By default, you will need to unlock your device's screen to turn on Siri. If you want to be able to say "Hey Siri" while your screen is locked, toggle on "Allow Siri When Locked."
