All About Tops and Bottoms

What is a top?
A top is someone who penetrates their partner during sex, or who focuses on giving pleasure.

What is a bottom?
A bottom is someone who is penetrated during sex, or who focuses on receiving pleasure.

What is a switch?
A switch is someone who both tops and bottoms.

What is a side?
A side is someone who doesn’t prefer any penetrative sex, and would rather have sex in other ways.

Are top, bottom, verse, etc., personality types?
Not really! You’ve probably seen people on social media use these words like they’re personality types, and we played along for this quiz, but in reality, they only describe what a person wants during sex, not what a person is like when you meet them.

It’s fun to pretend that these words describe someone’s personality, but when you’re talking about sex, it can confuse the conversation. Queer people (and even straight people) use these terms to navigate and understand sex, and when you use them as personality types instead, it can cause misunderstanding.

Always remember that tops can be shy, or outgoing, or kind, or selfish. Likewise, bottoms can be timid, or lighthearted, or serious. Your preferred position during sex doesn’t speak to your vibe as a person.

But I thought tops were dominant and bottoms were submissive?
Some are, sure! But many bottoms are also dominant, and many tops are submissive. Again, it just describes what position someone takes during sex, not how they act during sex, or even outside of sex.
