Google Maps offers different ways to add labels, or tags, to a location. If you want to create a custom map with tagged locations, you can use Google's My Maps tool in a web browser. You can also add labels to Google Maps to help you find places later, both on your computer and phone or tablet. This guide will teach you three simple ways to tag places in Google Maps on your computer, Android, iPhone, or iPad.
Locations Tagging on Google Maps
- To label a place in the Google Maps app, search for a location, tap Add label, and type a name.
- In Google Maps on your computer, search for a location, click Add label, and enter a location name.
- To create a custom map with tagged places, go to mymaps.google.com, create a new map, drop a pin, and type a name.
Steps
-
Go to the map location you want to tag. Using this method, you can add a custom label to any place on Google Maps. You will be able to search for the label (tag) by name in Google Maps to get directions. This can be helpful for marking people's addresses, your favorite picnic spots, or any other place you might want to visit again. To find a location:[1]
- To go to a specific address, tap Search here at the top of Google Maps, enter an address or intersection, and select the best match from the search results.
- Alternatively, you can drag the map to the desired location, then zoom in for a closer look. To zoom in, place two fingers over the location and spread them outward, like a reverse-pinch.
- Pinch the screen to zoom back out if needed.
- If you want to tag your current location, tap the compass needle icon (near the bottom-right corner of the map) to center the map, then zoom in.
-
Drop a pin at the location you want to tag. You can skip this step if you found the location by address. Otherwise, long-press the location you want to tag, and you'll see "Dropped pin" at the bottom of the screen.Advertisement
-
Tap Add label. The "Add label" screen will appear.
-
Name the location. Type a name for the place you want to tag, then tap Done or the checkmark to save it.[2]
-
View your tagged places. You can access your location tags in Google Maps by tapping You at the bottom, then tapping Labeled. You can also type the label into Google Maps any time you want to see it on the map or get directions.

This can be helpful for marking people's addresses, your favorite picnic spots, or any other place you might want to visit again. To find a location:
- Enter an address or intersection into the search bar and press Enter or Return.
- Alternatively, drag the map to the general vicinity, then zoom in by clicking the + at the bottom-right or scrolling upward with your mouse's srcrollwheel.
- To zoom out, click the -, or use your mouse's scrollwheel to scroll down.
- If you want to tag your current location, you can also click the location symbol (it looks like crosshairs with a circle inside) near the bottom-right corner of the map.
-
Drop a pin at the desired location. If you entered an address, you can skip this step. Otherwise, click and hold your mouse cursor to drop a pin at the place you want to tag. When the pushpin appears, you can lift your finger from the mouse button.
-
Click the address of the location at the bottom of the map. It's on the tile that says the location's address and coordinates. This opens a sidebar on the left side of the map.
-
Click Add a label on the left sidebar. The "Add a label" pop-up will open.
-
Type a name for the location and press ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return. Your tagged location is now saved.
-
View your tagged places. You can access your location tags in Google Maps on your computer by clicking the bookmark icon in the left panel, then clicking Labeled. You can also type the label into Google Maps any time you want to see it on the map or get directions.
-
Go to My Maps in your web browser. If you want to create a custom map with your own tagged places, you can use Google's My Maps tool to do so. There's no mobile app, so whether you're using a computer, phone, or tablet, you'll need to go to mymaps.google.com in your web browser and sign in with your Google account.
- Even though you can't create your custom map in the Maps app, you will be able to access your custom maps while you're on the go in Google Maps.[3]
- If you want to geotag your business in Google Maps, check out How to Add Your Business to Google Maps.
-
Create a new map. If you already have a map, select it instead. To create a new one, click or tap the Create a New Map button and tap Create to create a new one now.[4]
- Name your map by replacing "Untitled map" with your preferred name.
-
Navigate to the area where you need to place your tag. You can do this in either of the following two ways:
- Click on any point on the current map, drag it with the mouse, and zoom in to find the area. You can zoom using the plus (+) and minus (-) signs panel found at the bottom right of the map, or by using your mouse's scroll wheel.
- Enter a specific location into the search field at the top of the page. As you type, Google Maps will suggest possible places you can select by clicking them in the drop-down menu.
-
Click the location marker icon. It's the rounded pushpin icon in the icon bar just below the search bar at the top of the map. Your mouse cursor will become a crosshair symbol.[5]
-
Click the map to tag a location. This opens a pop-up window where you can type a name and description of the location. If you'd like, you can also click the camera icon to upload a photo that represents the location.
- After you fill out the pop-up, click Save to save your location.
-
View the location. After you tag a place, you will see a blue pushpin at that location. Click the pushpin to open the menu, which displays the location's name, details, coordinates, and editing options.
- To change the place name or description, click the pencil icon.
- To change the color of the pushpin, click the paint bucket icon.
-
Use your map in Google Maps. If you want to access your custom maps in the Google Maps app on your Android, iPhone, or iPad, just open Google Maps, tap You at the bottom, then tap Maps at the bottom-right corner of the page. Tap any map to open it.[6]
