Get rid of the PIN on your Samsung phone or tablet
PDF download Download Article

Do you hate when your Samsung phone asks you for a PIN every time you pick it up? While having to enter a PIN is a helpful security measure, it can get annoying when you're just trying to get things done. This wikiHow guide will teach you how to remove the PIN that protects the screen of your Samsung Galaxy.

Remove PIN on Samsung Galaxy

To remove the PIN code on a Samsung Galaxy, you'll need to activate a different lock type. If you don't want to use a PIN or password for your device, select "None" or "Swipe" in your Lock Screen settings. If your new phone requires a PIN, you can always remove it later.

  1. To do this, pull down the notification bar from the top of the home screen and tap the gear icon.[1]
  2. It's next to a blue icon of a lock. This is where you can manage your lock screen type and Always On Display.[2]

  3. Once your PIN is accepted, you'll be able to choose a different lock type.[3]
  4. If you like swiping the screen but don’t want to enter a PIN or password, select Swipe. Otherwise, choose a different lock type, such as Pattern, Password, None, or any of the options under the “Biometrics” header.[4]
    • Keep in mind that each type of screen lock has a different level of security. For example, None or Swipe has no security, as anyone can access your phone without having to enter a PIN. On the other hand, Password is high security, as only those who know the password will be able to get into your phone.
  5. The steps vary by lock type. Once your new lock is set up, the PIN will no longer be active.[5]
    • Pattern: Draw a pattern connecting at least four dots, then redraw to confirm.
    • Password: Enter and confirm a 4-16 character password.
    • Biometrics: If you select Iris, Face, or Fingerprints, follow the prompts to record your data, then set up a backup password when prompted.[6]
    • Not every phone will have the same options. For example, "Iris" is a feature available on S8, S8+, S9, S9+, Note8, and Note9.[7]

Alternatives to Removing PIN

  1. If you set up facial recognition or fingerprint ID, you will not need to enter a PIN every time you want to use your Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet.
    • Biometric lock options vary by device, but you may be able to choose facial recognition, fingerprint, iris (eye recognition), or intelligent scan.
  2. If you need to get information quickly from your phone but don't want to have to unlock the screen, you can avoid having to input your PIN by adding widgets to your lock screen. You can do so by long-pressing the lock screen, tapping + Widgets, selecting a category, and then selecting the widget you want to add.[8]
    • You will also find an option to add widgets in the "Lock screen and AOD" menu.
  3. With Extend Unlock, you can force your Samsung phone to remain unlocked in specific locations, when it detects that it's on your body, or if it's near a trusted device (such as a Samsung Watch). This feature is not available on all devices. To enable the feature:
    • Open your Settings and go to Lock screen and AOD.
    • Tap Extend Unlock.
    • Select On-body detection, Trusted places, or Trusted devices.
      • For example, you can set your Samsung Galaxy so it remains unlocked while you're at home. Select Trusted places, choose Add trusted place, then enter an address or select it on the map. Tap Use this place and then Add.[9]
  4. If you've turned on the feature that makes your Samsung phone or tablet safe for kids, they'll be prompted to enter a PIN every time they open an app you have not authorized. If you don't want to use this feature anymore, turning it off is easy:
    • From the Samsung Kids home screen, tap and select Close Samsung Kids.
    • Enter your PIN. When the PIN is accepted, the feature will be disabled.[10]

But what if I don't want to set any kind of new lock? My phone says I must choose a new PIN and I don't want that or any kind of safety lock.

Just put a simple code like 1111 or 3333 and you can change it later in the settings. Keep in mind that the least secure setting "Swipe" is the most vulnerable if you leave your phone in a public place.
